January 2012 Weddings

What's the deal with negotiating venue cost, I thought January was off season...?

Hi everyone,

So my fiance and I decieded after researching budget wedding advice that we would host our wedding in January since it is considered wedding off-season here in California, you know it's a bit rainy and cold. However the vendors i've gone to while some are midly willing to work closly to my budget most are still asking for there prime time prices?
I'm looking at the Kyoto & sportsmen's lodge in Studio city and today i'm heading to Ramsey's at the club ( saw it on another knottie's post) but there still giving prime time prices.

Can any of you ladies give me some advice on how to negotiate an affordable price ?

My budget is 4500 for 80 people

Thanks ladies

  • I was not able to negotiate the venue cost but my photographer, videographer, band, and lightning did give me a lot of savings since it'a a January date.

  • Yay a Ca bride! Negotiating with my venue vendor was really easy. I made it very clear that I was in love with the place. We started off paying around 60 per person for food. After I few emails I once again stressed how much I love the venue but could not afford that price, he then lowered it to 45 per person but I would have to provide the champagne and pay a cake cutting fee. I was super thankful for his offer but did not feel comfortable with that price so i asked him to put together an appitizer only menu and let me know the price. The next time we went to see the venue I asked about the app prices. He did some quick number crunching and said he would do the silver package (the 65pp one) for 40pp and would include the champagne and cake! So I think it comes Dow. To being firm on your price and letting them know you cannot budge. If they're not willing to work with you then I would look elsewhere. They shouldn't charge peak prices during the off season. Sorry for any typos, I'm finally able to post from my phone!

  • Just say you can't afford the price, if they really want your business, they will knock it down.
  • i think it has to do with how popular the place is, too...we are in TX, so it's considered off season for us too (we get wonky weather) but our venue is very popular, apparently. boo...

but everyone else has been REALLY willing to negotiate..so that has been very helpful.

but everyone is right. If they want your business, they will work with you.

  • Mine is MN so it will be cold and very snowy in Jan for us.  Our venue had a "off season price" already laid out.  It was actually a lot cheaper.
I didn't get any other deal from other vendors because we are off season.  :(
    GL!

  • Thanks knottie's for all the helpful advice.

Sassygirl im definetly going to try sticking firm with my price and keep talking to the vendor and pray that she's willing to budge.

I'm finding the same thing.  Ours is late January on a Wednesday.  Some of the minor vendors have come off their prices, but the big ticket items don't care.

I can't get the traditional reception venues (hotels and such) to budge at all.  I've resorted to local asian restaurants (my fiance is Thai) and places with party rooms.
  • My FI and I went to a brazillian resturant for my birthday last night, I was thinking you know what this would make an awesome place for a reception with great food and only $35 pp.

Maybe i'll give alittle more thought to that option
