XP: No more hand-canceling

(I also posted this on the Invites board)
So this is a bummer.
I went to the Post Office on Saturday and asked for the card I was mailing to be hand canceled.  I was told that because of the recent layoffs and budget-trimming measures at the PO, hand canceling is, as of very recently, a thing of the past.
I was also told that if the worker you speak with agrees to hand cancel, they're just humoring you because they don't want a bridal meltdown.
I'm not trying to induce mass panic, just want you girls to be advised.

It's when the post office processes mail by hand, as opposed to running it through the machines.  If you have delicate parts to your invitations, such as crystal brooches, the machines can damage or break them.
