what to wear-help!

Hi ladies,
Im going to a friends wedding in a couple of weeks and i have no idea what I should wear. Its black tie (ive never been to a black tie event before) and at a mansion on long island. I haven't seen most of these people since college and I really don't want to feel out of place. Should it be a long dress or a cocktail dress?
Any help is appreciated!

I would wear a long dress, for sure.  You'll risk being (and feeling) under-dressed all night in a cocktail dress.

If it's black-tie, I agree with PP, you could risk being under dressed if you go cocktail.  I usually go long if it's black-tie.

Way better to be a little overdone than to be underdone so deff go with the long.
