taking a chance...theme idea

Ok, I've posted this question before, but not on the board, and I didn't get very positive responses.  (Some were kind of rude acutally) but I'm going to try again to actually get some advice because I am at a loss.

My FI is big into mobster movies, and mobster history.  (he's acutally quite a mobster historian) and the only thing he has really asked for with this wedding is to some how have a mobster/Godfather theme reception.  He doesn't want over the top or anything "hookie" as he calls it, but he's picked out pin-stripe tuxes and wants him and his GM to wear fedora's at the reception.

Our reception is being held in a casino, which I think is the perfect location, and my dress for the recption is Dominique by Maggie Sottero (in the silver mist shown on the web site).  Our colors are hot pink and Navy with silver and green accents.

What other ideas do you have for centerpeices and reception decor?  I know that a mobster idea seems stupid to some (from comments on my previous post) but this is the only thing my FI has asked for, and for everything he has done for me, he deserves it...

Thanks ladies!

Re: taking a chance...theme idea

  • You're in the right place!  Check out some inspirations from the roaring 20's!  You could use famous mobsters as table names.  I think luxury...pearls, martinis, cigars, fur wraps, etc.
  • Pearls...How did I not think of that?!  LOL  I also love the mobster table names!  Perfect!  Our wedding is in the middle of July so fur wraps might be a bit much, but feathers maybe??
  • Yes, you are now in the right place for this discussion. There's a lot of tolerance here for stuff that is not orthodox Cool

I think that sounds fun--it's great that your FI is engaged with that. And as you said, it's not that it has to be costume extravaganza, just "inspired" by that vintage/theme.

I've seen some gangster-themed weddings...there was a Bonnie & Clyde one somewhere recently--I'll look for that. I think someone posted it here recently. Anyone remember that?

  • My FI looks quite a lot like james gandolfini so that is the personal look he is going for in the wedding.  No zoot suits, that's too "hookie" for him.  I'd kinda like to take the theme a bit into our wedding ceremony also.  I purchased my dress already, but I'm thinking of carrying over the 30's-40's theme into our wedding ceremony also with the flowers and maybe even the style of my wedding dress.  So now I'm considering a 2nd dress for the ceremony...thoughts?

And thank you so much ladies for being supportive of my theme!  Like I said, the last time I posted something about this, the comments were not helpful or supportive, and infact they turned it into a big joke.  I'm so happy to have found a wondful group of ladies who get my theme for the un-conventional!

  • I don't see anything wrong with your theme at all. Whoever said that it wasn't cool sounds like a boring person.

I agree with kelley's list. For July I would definitely do the feathers over fur. I'd also consider using palms. All of those old gangster films had those big potted palms in the Italian restaurants and nightclubs. Very art deco and classy. It might be fun to do a photo station/wall, too, if it isn't too hokey for you. You could add gangster-like props like mustaches, hats, boas, those long cigarette holders. We are making one for our victorian theme. We are taking a board, cutting holes in it, and putting frames around the hole. People will then be the paintings on the wall.

  • I think your theme sounds amazing! There is sadly not much support for anything "out of the ordinary" on the other boards. I lIke the idea of little gloves, long cigarette holders(as props for photos- smoking is gross).

  • I love the photo booth and props idea!  That's something that I would love to do and i think my guests would love that!  Plams are another thing I never thought of...wonder if I could rent those or if I would have to purchase them...

*See if you can rent a vintage car! It's great for photos and will make you feel stylish as you drive off.
*Also, for bridesmaid dresses, I've seen some really pretty gowns that have a flapper look to them without being flapper dresses. Search for tiered cocktail dresses.
*A jazz band could be cool if you can afford it (and if you like jazz!). Or if you could get your hands on a record/cd/mp3 player (Big Lots was selling them a while back for $60), you could play some old vintage records while still having the ability to play modern dance music.
*Consider having lace, feathers, ribbon added to floral arrangements or decorations.
*Find a vintage type writer and have guests type out their wishes for you on it, instead of having them write it on a wishing tree.
*Ostrich feather fans for the BM gifts
*Both your FI and you could wear black and white wing tip shoes! I saw it on a show once and it was so cute how they matched their shoe styles.
*Cigarette holders could also be used as card holders
*Centerpieces can be arranged around empty champagne/wine bottles or large brandy snifters.
*Since Save-the-Dates are usually fun and out there, it might be fun to make them look like a Houdini poster since he was huge back then. Maybe it could have a "gunshot" through it?
*As for invites, vintage tabloid newspapers could inspire you.
    *Fun names for cocktails!

Okay. I'm done. :P Sorry I'm so wordy.
  • I like the idea of naming the tables after gangsters.  As a gangster historian, your FI could get really involved with picking out who he'd like the tables named after.  You can use vintage frames to put a picture and name of the gangster.

I also like the idea of bringing in props for guests whether or not you have a photobooth.
