Retro and Vintage Weddings

vintage board newbie

glad to have found all you fellow vintage lovin' ladies who are brides to be! I can't seem to find like-minded brides anywhere, so this is really nice. I just got engaged and sell vintage on etsy, so this seems like the place to be. I'm from NJ (cue the jokes) and am planning on having a vintage-y, rustic wedding on a farm. I would really love to do a flapper or 1930s type affair, but the '50s and '60s seem to suit me and my fiance a bit more in personality and build. I'm in the process of getting a Dolly dress (I am visiting her showroom in NYC soon after a fruitless search for an actual vintage gown for myself) and am ordering the cutest save the dates made from a vintage print on etsy:

would love to hear all about your fab wedding too and can't wait to get to know you guys:).

Re: vintage board newbie

  • Ah, I did the fruitless search for a vintage gown too! I could see them, but these women appear to have been about half my size....well, maybe 1/4 of my size in plenty of cases too!

So I also did a new dress but vintage inspired.

The cards are cute. Etsy really is a great resource for gals like us that are a bit off the regular track.

  • Welcome! It is always good to get more people to our board! I also wanted a vintage dress, well, a recreation 1880s gown. But I couldn't find anyone local to make it and didn't trust it to get done from afar. Be sure to post pics of your dress when you get it!

  • Welcome! I'm relatively new here too, but a long time lurker. I want to see pics and get your opinion on the dolly dresses since you will likely see one in person before I do. Did you say you were looking at the Avila bay? I was torn between that one, the moon river or the manhattan which I ordered. Anywooo... Looking forward to getting to know you better!

Congrats on the proposal and welcome!  And... sorry to be a Debby Downer, but because you're a vendor on Etsy, that is worthy of getting banned from theknot.  No vendors are allowed here.  However, you seem genuine, and I hate to cut you off right when you got here.  So please, PLEASE don't ever mention what your shop is, or link to it in your siggy, or anything like that.  don't let others know you're an etsy seller.

That aside, I LOVE the save the dates you posted!  Those are amazing.  That seller has the cutest stuff.  Tell us more about your wedding!  Oo, and your proposal!

  • Nukke, sorry, I had no idea about that! That's precisely why I didn't mention my site by name. I am not a spammer. I swear I really am engaged and having a vintage wedding and am genuine :). Won't mention it again.

Glad you like the save the dates/invites. That seller is really nice and I recently got the sample of it in the mail and it's gorgeous. I think I'm going with her for all my wedding stationary. She can even change the vintage illustration to look like you and your fiance and her prices are very reasonable. I was also looking at Wedding Paper Divas. Have any of you guys used them before?

As for the Dolly dress, I am going soon to the NYC showroom and will let you know how it goes all and post pictures. Yes, I am interested in the Avila Bay, the Edmonton and one other that I forget the name of. I also really like Stephanie James' Josephine dress (completely out of my price range though) and am considering her Lizzie dress in champagne and lace. I'll try to attach a picture of that one to this post. She's sending me swatches this week to see what I think.

Ugh. Yes, genuine vintage dresses are teeny tiny. It sucks. Plus, I also feel like a new dress signals a new beginning as cheesy as that sounds. I want it to be completely  my own, you know? I also purchased an Adriana Papell gown for the ceremony that's a bit more traditional. I got it at Lord & Taylor and it's even more pretty in person and kind of bohemian (see below). Basically, I'm going for 2 totally separate looks for ceremony and reception.

So, far, I don't know what else to tell you about the wedding. It's taking place in Fall 2012, so it's awhile off. Some things will be DIY, some things not so much, lol. The first things I ticked off my list were the adorbs save the dates shown and my (2) dresses. I also want awesome, colorful heels by Pour La Victoire! We are working out a definite date with our possible venue now. As for the proposal, I was running errands w/my boyfriend of 4 years (I am 29 btw), Ariel, all day during a weekend. All of a sudden, he took a sharp turn and we were at a jewelry store and he surprised me and we were ring shopping. suddenly It was awesome and surreal! The saleslady was like yapping on about clarity, cut, whatever and I was like, um, I don't want a white diamond, princess cut solitaire or whatever. She took me to this collection of jewelry called Le Vian which made the royal wedding engagement ring/Kate Middleton's sparkler years ago. It was just what I wanted. All the stuff looks like estate jewelry but it's not and is really opulent and colorful. They use a lot of rose gold too, which I love. The ring is below.

So pleased to meet all of you :)! Would love to hear about you all as well!
I was also looking at Wedding Paper Divas. Have any of you guys used them before? Posted by ariandnatty
I haven't used them for invites, but I used some of their templates for a wedding website.  I love their designs, and I've heard good reviews for them.

    What a great engagement story!

I'm Eeva, 28, and also a rose gold aholic. Nice to meet you. ;)  DH and I got matching rose-gold wedding bands with a hammered finish.  My e-ring is my late Finnish grandmother's from 1929 and looks like this:  (this is not my actual ring, but it's nearly identical)

Matt and I met while I was in Finland studying for a year.  He'd lived there a few years prior while on a Rotary International exchange.  We met completely at random over Skype and he was looking for a Finnish girl to teach him Finn (so he says.  he was clearly looking for a girlfriend).  He came away with me (a Canadian and Finn).  He's from PA and proposed to me on a beach in the Outer Banks North Carolina in front of his family while they were on a family vacation.  Then we lived in Japan for a couple years and just moved back to Canada in August.  Nice to meet you!

  • Welcome!  And I have to say... I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your save-the-dates... mostly because we used the same ones!  Woohoo!  :)

  • Yay for GoGoSnap on Etsy and their awesome stuff! That's so funny that you used the same ones, dinnaming :). I guess I'll stick with her for all my stationary needs then. I feel like Wedding Paper Divas will be meh when I get my samples from them in the mail and they're a bit more expensive/not as nice looking from what I've heard. I see you're from good old Jerz. Did you have your wedding here? We might be using the Raritan inn for ours, in Califon, the Middle Valley section of NJ.

Hi Eeva :). I feel like we are bridal doppeldangers what with the similar taste in footwear (PLV has such feminine, unique shoes and bags and I totally get the French feel to them. They're very Sofia Coppola in Paris if she wore really high heels. I love that they have a bridal/evening line because most wedding shoes are pretty heinous) and jewelry plus we are a similar age, lol. I was just reading the thread about fiances on this board and came across your story... Your guy is really cute and you guys look sweet together. The story of how you met is nice too and I love what you are wearing there. Btw, that ring is gorge! I love the art deco detailing. I adore vintage rings and wanted one but ended up with the amethyst one I have (in rose gold!).

<div>We're getting married in July in South Jersey--- at the Moorestown Communnity House in Moorestown, NJ.  I got tons of compliments for our save the dates.  GoGoSnap was great to work with.  For our invitations, I went with a friend of my sister-in-law, who is a graphic designer, and does wedding invitations on the side.  She created a simple, art deco design for us.  It was wonderful!  </div>

  • I just looked up the Moorestown Community House and it looks really pretty :). I love all the wood paneling.Idk why I though you were already married. Probably because I saw that you'd been a member since last summer and got confused. Anyway, you're wedding sounds like it'll be really nice!

  • Did you guys see these pour la victorie shoes on sale for at $39? http://www.6pm.com/search/null/filter/pricingTag/%22PLV3995%22/

  • Omg, I've never seen their shoes so cheap! Thanks so much. I've never seen that site before either.
  • It's a reputable site from what I understand. I'm planning to order a pair myself now :)

  • Welcome welcome!! I'm also pretty new but I am excited to hear all your planning ideas!!!
