QOTD

Where is your hometown?  What makes it special?

I was born and raised outside of Buffalo, NY.

It's a really great place for a family. Everyone is very friendly. The city itself is about 300,000 people with about a million in the metro area, which means it has all the amenities of a big city, but it's not too huge - traffic isn't a huge problem, cost of living is pretty low.

There was/is an issue with jobs since Buffalo used to be quite industrial and is now part of the "rust belt" along with places like Cleveland and Detroit, but they're finding new industry. Bioinformatics is the new hot job opportunity and there's a huge cancer research center, several universities including a large research university, etc. A few banks/financial industries. But there's also a sense of comraderie. Everyone else always asks if it's boring or cold living in Buffalo, but a lot of people from Buffalo use that as a badge of honor. (And no, it's not terribly cold, it's just snowy, and I know Angelenos don't know the difference!) It's like Buffalonians are all in it together - the fact that our city isn't seen as, uh, desireable, or people make jokes about our snow and our losing sports teams.

But it's a really pretty area (lots of parks, trees, plus the great lakes and Niagara river), the weather's really not too bad (4 seasons, and the summer is somewhat humid, but never too hot). And the food is great - chicken wings, pizza, hot dogs, beer, beef on weck (slices roast beef with au jus and horseradish on a roll with sea salt). It's not really a fine dining kind of area. There's a large Polish popluation (the most Polish city aside from Chicago) so there's tons of polish-type food - pierogies and hot dogs/sausages. It's like a mini Chicago with less jobs. ;-)

    My hometown is Johnstown, PA.

It is special cuz it has the world's steepest inclined plane (see pic below) and is known for surviving its floods.  Plus, it is special cuz my family is there!

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, Ca which is very rare. My mom was too! My grandfather was from Needles (sp?), Ca... so I am a true California girl!

I love L.A. because there are so many different people and things to do! L.A. has its highs and lows but overall the weather wins my heart!

Uh, no.  There are 2 train-like cars that ride up and down on tracks .  Yes it is on a hill, but no it is not just a hill.  Google them.   There are some in Pittsburgh as well, and I'm sure other places.  They are actually cool as cars can go on them too!

I was just stating a fun fact.  Inclined planes were big back east, but I have found most people out here don't even know what they are.  So funny because I grew up with them.

    In case you're interested...

Ohhhh, so it's the whole car/tracks thing? I was thinking incline plain for some reason and I'm like, "but a plain is flat, and therefore it's an oxymoron to be an inclined plain..."

We didn't have anything like that in Buffalo, but have you been to Angel's Flight? It's sort of the same concept - it's the "world's shortest railroad" and it's basically to help people get up Bunker Hill downtown. Originally for women doing shopping and schoolkids, I think.

PS, I have a good friend from North Cambria and she went to a Catholic high school in Johnstown, I think.

Mery, yeah, it's actually cool.  It's Johnstown's "big"  attraction!  Hahahaha!  (It's a small city.)  Oh, I just remembered... Even tho it is such a small city, All the Right Moves was filmed there as well as the hockey movie Slap Shot!  Totally forgot about that.  These things are huge in a small town! :)

No, I've never been to Angel's Flight.  Sounds fun!

I wonder if your friend went to Bishop McCort (that's the biggest one)?

I'm from Santa Clarita...born and raised here, left for three years and came back! I love it because it's an hour from the beach an hour-ish to the mountains and close enough to Hollywood and LA where I could go and come back in less than a day!
