E-ring cut...

My fiance and I are going to go look at rings this weekend. I've been looking at different styles online to get an idea of what I like. I can't decide between a round, cushion or princess cut diamond. So I was wondering what diamond cut you ladies have or prefer? And why? Because you just prefer the shape, the sparkle, or just cause?

I like round brilliant because a well cut diamond of this shape maximizes the sparkle!  I also feel this cut will stand the test of a lifetime in terms of not being too trendy. I realized as I looked at more cuts and settings that traditional was best for me vs. something trendy.

I have an emerald cut diamond (looks really close to an asscher) and I love it.  I loved the ring as a whole because it was different.  You just have to go with what you like best.

Mine is a round.  I had toyed with the idea of a pear cut...but round is timeless and not trendy.  You'll know what you want when you see it on your finger.  Just try all of the different cuts on.  You'll know what's right for you.

My e-ring is a pear shaped solitaire. I would have never picked it out on my own, but it was my grandmother's, and she offered it to FI when she found out he was going to propose. I love it. I love love love emerald cut diamonds though. I think they're the prettiest.

I have a square cut emerald and love it. i knew i wanted an emerald but, for my ring the square cut is what made it! good luck!!!!!

I think you will know which style you like best when you go to try rings on.  Like you, I looked online at rings before my guy and I went ring shopping and was unsure on my taste until I tried on rings.  Once I saw different rings on my finger I knew exactly which styles were "me" and which ones weren't.  I ended up with round :)

I have a princess cut diamond solitare and love it. I had been looking at rings a lot online after we started talking about marriage and gave him some ideas. FI did a great job and I love it!

I have a cushion cut diamond solitare...it's not very common to have a cushion as a solitare I have heard.  It is extremely sparkly and reflects like very well.  People often don't know what kind of cut it is because it's not quite like the norm.

I didn't really prefer anything inparticular as FI and I never even went ring shopping together.  He surprised me with a princess cut and I LOVE it! He wanted to get a single solitaire since he thinks it's very classic, but he knew I'd like to have diamonds down the band as well.  He did an amazing job picking out the perfect ring for me with no help from me at all Smile

When my fiance and I started talking about getting married,  I went online to research what I liked.  I really liked the cushion cut.  He ended up buying a square radiant cut.  I love how sparkly and blingy it is!!!  It really reflects the light beautifully and I couldn't be happier.

i used to really want a princess cut diamond - but i think they're more of a trendy thing.  gorgeous, but trendy.

other cuts like marquise and pear shaped, or even heart shaped can be unique - i just couldn't ever wear one because they'd catch on everything.

emerald cut is pretty, just not as shiny.

mine is a round - and it's gorgeous.  it shines like a freaking... i don't even know.  but it's awesome.

another thing to keep in mind - if you're into size, a 1 carat princess cut diamond looks smaller than a 1 carat round cut diamond.  so that's something else to consider.

I have a cushion cut. I liked it because it has a little bit of a vintage feel. I also like it because it is kind of a mix between round and princess so it makes it a little more uncommon. It sparkles ALOT, I love this shape and it was the best choice for my taste.

Get what YOU want.... don't worry about what is trendy or what is classic or what is vintage. It won't matter, because you love it, not everyone else.  Look at what you like and if you want a surprise have your boyfriend go pick out what he feels best accentuates who you are.  Soon he will be your fiance and that is what matters!

Mine is round.  I wasn't set on one cut until I started looking.  The round is definitely more sparkly than princess and that's what was important to me.  Emerald are unique and pretty, but I think you need a very high grade of diamond to look good.  I'm also a bit more of a classic girl.

Emerald cuts are one of the oldest diamond cuts, older that round brilliant.

I prefer princess, emerald, asscher and radiant cuts. But I am going to look at rings this weekend with my boyfriend, and who knows? I might fall in love with something completely different!

I have an Asscher stone set in a vintage art deco setting.  I like that it's unique and has a romantic history.  It looks identical to the ring photo I have in my profile.

When my FI and I started talking about rings, I was SURE I wanted a princess cut.  If he had gone out to pick my ring by himself, I'm sure that's what he would have purchased, and I would have loved it!  But he asked me to go with him and I chose a round brilliant.  The sparkle is amazing and it looked so much better with the band I wanted. I get a lot of comments that its classic looking, which I take as a compliment.   I'm so happy with my choice and you will be too.  Keep an open mind, try on many and you'll get exactly what you want!   Best of luck and Enjoy the moment!

I love Princess cut. I was originally torn between Princess and Brilliant. They are both classic (in my opinion) but the square cut is just a little bit different. I wouldn't call in trendy, but it's not completely a 'traditional' ring, which is why I love it. Plus, it suits me because J. calls me Princess anyways. =D I really love Asscher, because it's a little bit vintage and different, but they're harder to find. In the end, go with what YOU want. Don't worry if it's trendy or classic. A lot of factors play into picking a shape- rounds are sparkly and can be bigger-looking than a square. Go with what you love, no matter what!

I always loved pear and marquis cuts but both FI and I were worried about the sharp corners.  In the end we got the perfect mix - round brilliant centre with purple sapphire pear sidestones pointing out - all together it looks like a marquis!  The sharp corners are protected since the shape runs along the band so no worries.

I am so indecisive about what kind of ring I want because they're all so beautiful...if it sparkles, I'm in love. I think that we decided to go with an emerald cut with a halo setting (tiny diamonds all the way around) and diamonds going halfway down the band. Very vintage:) Here are my opinions about diamond shapes though...maybe they'll help. These are only what comes to my mind when I see particular cuts.
Round-Classic and Timeless. Will never go out of style. Traditional. Very Sparkly.
Princess-Modern but will stand the test of time. Not as much sparkle as round but catches light well.
Asscher-Gorgeous and unique. Will get lots of compliments.
Emerald-Regal.Though not as much sparkle, it's so clear. Someone mentioned that it reminded them of an icy pond and I thought it was a beautiful analogy.
Oval-The perfect heirloom piece of jewelry. Very Vintage and slightly out of the norm.
Marquise-Definitely appears larger than it really is, so great if you're on a budget. Truth be told though I've known a few women with marquise cuts that felt like it looked dated. I think they're great though and look like a "diamond" the way I pictured it when I was little.
Pear-Very pretty and feminine. I think this shape might be a little bit "trendy" but it was one of my top choices for a diamond shape. I think it looks much better when it's in a designed mount than when it is a solitare though.
Radiant-This is a very different one...I don't think I've ever actually seen one in person which is weird. I'll bet it sparkles a ton though with a name like that:)
Heart-When I see a heart I think "sweet". It kind of reminds me of something I would've gotten out of a quarter machine though when I was little. I think you have to have the personality to pull this one off. Patti on the Millionaire Matchmaker has one and I think it's fabulous since it reflects her so well.
Cushion-This one is also very classic looking. If you want something between a round and a princess this is the way to go. Looks amazing as a solitare and in a mount and it sparkles!

These are just my thoughts. When it comes right down to it, I think you need to follow your insticts and figure out what kind of ring reflects you the best.
    Good Luck finding THE Ring!

Keep in mind, some cuts are popular but they're not designed for the greatest amount of light to reflect through the diamond.  That's just a fact of how the stone will be cut.

The most important thing is that you like it.   But the next is to think about what you're wanting in a stone in the first place.  Next, look at the variety of stones and see if you can compare ones apples to apples - ones rated the same but in different cuts.

There is a reason why a round brilliant is timeless.  It reflects the most amount of light looking fantastic through the years.

I have three emerald cut diamonds, with the center stone a little bigger than the others. I love it, and it is VERY sparkly. As pp said, though, with an emerald cut, you'll spend more - you'll want a better quality diamond than what you can get away with in a round cut. You can see flaws much easier in an emerald cut, but that's why I love mine...I love looking inside my stones, at all the precise cut lines.

Seriously?  If her FI is on board with both choosing, why not try to ask around?

She isn't saying, "I don't know if I want to marry him but I do want a big rock!"

IMO, if you're going to wear a stone for the rest of your life, figure out the one that you love and nudge your BF that's what you like.

DH and I were on the same page the entire time (and I never said that he had to buy a diamond), but when  it came to that time, he knew what would be the awesome to me.
