Advisor vent!

my BF's advisor signed him up for the wrong math class this semester. Its not a huge deal and he will probably be able to get it fixed but I feel like this has happened a million times with this advisor! It stresses BF (and me) out  a ton! I don't understand why this guy can't do his job.

Also we don't understand how he got into the class in the first place since he very clearly does not have the pre-reqs. for it. Anyways that is my little mini-vent. What a great way to start off the semester huh?

Re: Advisor vent!

  • I totally understand.  FI's advisor tried to tell him 2 weeks ago that he still had 10 classes left, and would graduate May 2011 instead of December 2010.  He took 2 of those classes before we even met, and 3 while we were just getting to know each other.  Thankfully, it was straightened out, but I don't really get it, either.  I don't know about your school, but our advisors are just advisors...they're not profs or students with other things to do.  I don't understand how many of them can't do their one job right.  Hope everything gets straightened out!
  • I don't trust advisors. I go in with a very clear idea of what I want/need, and really just double check it with them, because I know they miss stuff all the time. Almost everyone has an advisor horror story at some time or another. Hope it all gets cleared up!
He pretty much had me at "hello".

Precisely what I did. My former advisor at my previous school was an idiot. I eventually requested to have another advisor, and she was just fantastic. Sometimes you get ones who are really on top of things. Sadly, 90% of them don't know what they're doing. I used to always consult my upperclass friends who were on the same track as me, and then run that by advisors.
  • My advisor that I had in undergraduate at first, let me take a class designed for pre-med, didnt answer anything when I tried to contact her to drop the class, which caused me to get a D in the class and screw up my GPA and caused me to not get magna cum laude on my diploma. I ended up being able to switch my advisor after I complained and then everytime I went to talk about my classes I had the entire breakdown of my classes I will take and have already taken. My new advisor was very on top of everything and laughed whenever I brought in my breakdown but at least I was thorough
