Make sure you're considering a faux cake as an alternative.  It is very affordable if you're on a budget.  In the interest of full disclosure, the shop I deliver for specializes in faux cakes, but if you google 

faux wedding cakes northeast ohio

you'll find many others.  It's usually considerably less expensive and offers very little downside.
