Is a church wedding possible?

I have always dreamed of having my wedding ceremony in a church. I am open to the idea of getting married at our reception venue, but I keep thinking about a church wedding. Here's the problem: we don't belong to a church. Is my dream out the window?

  • No! Your dream is not out the window!
The church I belong to wanted over one thousand dollars for the ceremony alone. Ummm not in our budget. Our second obstacle was I am Lutheran and my fiance is Catholic. We found a GREAT church (Grace Lutheran) in Andover that is less than half of what my church wanted. You don't need to be a member and being different religions is not a problem what so ever. We attended the marriage class last week and it was actually really great. It was less church focussed and more marriage and how to face challenges as a married couple. After you complete the class they fill out this form so you get a discount on your marriage license too! I highly recommend it!

  • Not out the window at all.  My sister and brother in law got married at a church nobody we know belongs to and they were totally great to work with (Gustavus Adolphus in St. Paul).  They had to do their marriage counseling and the rate was higher than for a member - but it was cheaper than getting married in my parents church where they ARE members.
  • Check out Fort Snelling, Lakewood Cemetary, Bigelow Chapel, Graebner Memorial Chapel @ Concordia U, Hoversten Chapel @ Augsburg U, 3 chapels at Luther Seminary, Little White Church in Golden Valley

  • There are two churches in Minneapolis that are open to anyone of any denomination.  I don't believe you would have to go through any counseling to rent out the chapels.

  • Weyerhaeuser Chapel at Macalester is also another option :-) It's a REALLY unique space, considered having my ceremony there and my parents got married there.

  • it's definitely not out! Do your homework and you'll be juuuust fine.

My church, Eden Prairie Assembly of God has member & non-member fees and it's a difference of $200.  For non-members, wedding only is $600; for wedding & reception it's $850.  This includes the sancturay (max 275), fellowship Hall (max 100 sit down), dressing rooms, cleaning service, sound technician, and an onsite wedding coordinator(s).
