Camping

This warming weather has me thinking about summer. We really want to go camping someplace nice this summer but close enough that we could do a Friday-Sunday trip and not spend all the time driving.

Any suggestions? We're thinking tents but we'd like access to drinking water.

I would suggest Lewiston.  It's about a 3 hour drive "up north" from here. They have a campground called Shady Acres. I used to live in Lewiston and I love it up there.

We go here every year: http://www.riverviewcampground.com/. It is a nice place and not too far. We do the canoeing too. It gets a little crazy on the river, so I wouldn't recommend it for kids, but for adults, it is a killer time!

Before FI's grandparents sold their cabin, we went camping up in Sterling. I don't know if that's too far for you (about an hour and half for us from Novi). But we liked it because it was far enough away from anything and felt like a vacation.

There is Whites for camping and canoeing/tubing which is probably where we'll go this year. Whites will even drop you off so you can tube down the Rifle River for a couple hours. I think there's other places that you can look up, too around that area.

Go to Proud Lake in Commerce Twp.  We used to go a couple times a year and had a great time.  It is a state park so you will have to pay a fee for parking.

Port Huron KOA is very nice.... Cabins w/ heat if you need it. And plenty of running water. There is lots to do there too!

Our first camping trip of the season is going to be at Sleepy Hallow.  It's in Laingsburg (near Lansing).  I believe it is a state park.  We will be taking our travel trailer... but I think you can tent camp there as well.  It's pretty nice and has a small lake near it.

Every year we go to Sugarloaf campgrounds with a bunch of friends Labor Day weekend. They have water and running showers and it's on a little lake. Some of us do campers and the rest all have tents.

We've camped all over Michigan (growing up, pretty much all family vacations were camping in Michigan), but my absolute favorite campground is Young State Park.  It's right on lake Charlevoix, which unlike Lake Michigan, actually gets warm enough to swim comfortably in!  It's a really nice, modern campground with drinking water, flush toilets, real showers, etc.  It's a nice, quiet family campground.  They even have some pretty nice hiking trails and a separate little pond for fishing.  I absolutely love it!  So does my whole family and, after I took him there last summer, FI!  It's always our first choice when we go camping.
