Hi! My name is Alyssa Sunkin and I am a reporter for the Times Herald-Record in Orange County. I am putting together a story about marriage for tomorrow's paper and am hoping you all can help me out.
The latest U.S. Census data illustrates that marriages fell to a record low in 2009, with only 52 percent of adults aged 18 and over saying they were joined in wedlock, compared to 57 percent in 2000. What is particularly striking is the data shows that 46.3 percent of young adults 25-34 are among the never-married.
I am putting together a story analyzing this at a local level. I am hoping that I can find people in that age demographic that can speak to me about what marriage means to them, and how changing social norms and the recession have potentially impacted - or not - marriage plans.
