Inexpensive Cakes

So I just went on my first cake appointment and I am worried that I am going to have to spend an arm and a leg on a cake. Is it realistic to get a cake for around 100 people for less than approx. 500 dollars? Any ideas of where I can go for an inexpensive but nice cake?

Our cake for 125 people came to just under $300 including delivery

    From http://www.dessertworks.net/
We are getting a two tier cake (double layer bottom, so it has more height than width)
    a round for kitchen cutting
and a flourless chocolate cake for all of our gluten free friends (approx 4-6 but the cake will feed more)

I went with the tall two layer cake cause adding the third layer adds $100-150 more.

And I am going with a textured buttercream instead of fancy fondont or rolled chocolate.

Where is the wedding?  Delivery fees etc also make a difference.  We are having our wedding in Hull, so this is close for delivery.

So we went to Konditor Miester and I kid you not, the cakes were horrible. I LOVE cake and I am not picky at all , but these cakes had NO taste to them, so I would shy away from them. Plus they charge a heffty delievery charge into Boston. We went with Cakes For Occassions in Danvers. The wedding cake specialist was great and the cakes are A-MAZing. We are going with a white cake with white chocolate mousse filling and buttercream frosting and a simple cascading cherry blossom design on the outside. :)

I would say the norm for $ of a cake for 100 people would be anywhere from $3-$5 a slice, so you may be looking at a big bill for that many people.

I know some couples are doing a "fake" cake with one tier made of actual cake, and the rest of it is plastic. Then there is a full sheet cake in the back that is cut up and served to the guests....just a thought!
