Honeymoon Poll

So, I'm really stuck on the honeymoon!  We want somewhere in the carribean because we are taking only 7-8 days (we have another trip in January) so we don't want to spend too much time travelling. My FI doesn't do boats for a long duration (seasick) so a cruise is out.  I thought I was hooked on St. Lucia (rainforest, volcano, ziplining - its the hawaii of the caribbean) but the resort I love (Jalousie) is getting mixed reviews suddenly.  I also like St. John but is there more to do there than just snorkeling/diving.  And I like Puerto Rico (rainforest, zip line, horseback riding + direct flight) but is it romantic/special enough?  So what do we want... we want rainforest/lush landscape, zip line, horseback riding, romance, good food and a beautiful resort - if we're paying $400+/night, I expect greatness.  So ladies - where are you going and where do you recommend that we go??  Thanks!!

We stayed at the Ritz Carlton on St. Thomas...it is a beautiful resort, absolute paradise, amazing service, and sooo relaxing.  St. Thomas is a lot bigger and has more going on than St. John, but is only like a 15 minute ferry ride to St. John so it's really easy to do a day trip there for its beautiful beaches.  We also did a day tour of some of the British Virgin Islands, which was really fun because a lot of them are much more remote.

St. Lucia was my first pick too, but we also had a short-ish amount of time for our honeymoon, and it just seemed like St. Thomas was a lot easier/quicker to get to.  I would not hesitate to recommend the Ritz to anyone, but if what is really important to you is the rain forest, then St. Lucia is your best bet.  Have you looked at the Body Holiday on SL?  I'm dead set on going there for our next Caribbean trip.

We're going to Costa Rica.  Have you thought of it there?  Great for ziplining/jungle hikes/volcanos/hot springs/waterfalls and some awesome beaches too.  Otherwise I say do St. Lucia - I've had friends that went for their HM and loved it.

I've been to Puerto Rico, and though it's gorgeous, it's not "honeymoon-ish" to me.

Thanks all! I love the idea of the Ritz in St. Thomas...I know you can have crime anywhere and I have travelled the world so I hope this doesn't sound too silly, but anyone concerned about St. Thomas given the recent gang violence (and that poor girl on a cruise excursion with her family who was caught in the cross fire)? As for St. John - is there more to do than snorkel?  I think St.Thomas/St. John could be ideal!

As for St. Lucia- Bodyholiday looks fab but agree re: comment about short duration.  I love the Jalousie Plantation for its location but mixed reviews on Tripadvisor are killing me.  I'm just going to have to decide, aren't I?? well this may be the toughest decision :(

We only did the one day in St. John, and went there primarily for the beach (Honeymoon Beach, by the way, is the PERFECT remote, white sand, quiet island beach.)  So we didn't really explore the island, but at the port there are shops, restaurants, a small casino, etc. I'm not sure if there are the kind of activities in the Virgin Islands that you'd find in say Costa Rica or St. Lucia.  At the Ritz, though, there are quiet kind of things to do like yoga, painting classes, kayaking, paddleboating, etc.  Oh, and they have a fantastic catamaran that they take out for day trips, sunset sails, etc. with cocktails and apps - that was our favorite part of the trip.  We also went hiking and cave exploring on Virgin Gorda when we took our British Islands tour.

I hadn't heard about the gang violence before - that is a bit scary, but I certainly never felt unsafe or saw any sign of gangs.  There are constantly shuttles and cabs at the resort to take you downtown or out to dinner, so we never really had to fend for ourselves, if you know what I mean.  Anyway, good luck, I'm sure whatever you decide will be great!

    Hey CC,
My husband and I got married in November last year and we actually went to this awesome resort in Cancun called Excellence Playa Mujeres.  The resort is actually located about 30 minutes outside Cancun so you do not get any of the ghetto-ness of the hotel district.  Check out the reviews on trip advisor.  This place was like heaven on earth.  Its all inclusive and the food was really very good.  So much variety.  Jet Blue flies direct into Cancun.  Four hour flight!!

    Good Luck!!

    Gina
