Give me your thoughts re: oil spill

My mom is a retired science teacher. She worked with Dawn (the soap) on a big thing to get animals cleaned up from oil spills years ago. She has decided that she wants to go down and see the big oil spill. I don't think that's weird because she really has a scientific mind and I can see her really being interested in all this.

However, she wants to bring some back. In her mind, it's a piece of history. Again, I can sorta understand that. It is the worst oil spill in history. Here's what's REALLY bothering me. She wants to give out little bottles to her friends. Giving them 'pieces' of history.

To me, I see all the dying birds and turtles and to give away 'souvineers" seems...irreverent.

What say you?

  • I think it's a bit weird... but I guess I'm not offended by it. I'm not a fan of stupid little clutter in my own house but I get the "piece of history" thing.

  • I would not want that oil anywhere near me.

  • I agree with Apple.  I think it's odd having little vials of oil around the house.  It doesn't make me think of the wildlife, though.
  • the oil spill stresses me the eff out every time I think about it. why is it still not fixed?
and why does my dad blame Obama?
    parents are weird.
  • Why wouldn't she take an oil-covered sea shell? I can't imagine that collecting that crude is 1. safe or 2. allowed.  Not that they are even on most of the beaches where the oil is so she could get away with it. But why? It serves no purpose.

  • Why does anyone blame Obama?? Not like he can just swim down there and fix the damn thing.

I imagine she could do it safely, since she worked on that Dawn project, she knows what she's doing. Didn't think about it being legal or not. I agree it serves no purpose, but like I said, she thinks it's a piece of history. Like how people have pieces of the Berlin Wall.

  • I kinda think saving oil from the oil spill is a little morbid...

  • I get the "piece of history" thing.... but not sure if I get the bottles. That seems a little strange to me.

Speaking of the oil spill.... we were talking about it at work this morning. We were talking about what impact a hurricane would have.

One of my coworkers told me that there is already oil/chemicals that is literally raining down on people living in that area. I haven't actually heard this from a news source. But does anyone know anything about that?
  • This saddens me.  It saddens me mostly because it could have been prevented and it's still fucking leaking!!

My job and 90% of the people I know's jobs rely on oil and gas and without it I wouldn't make the money that I make.  But, jesus christ, seriously, I hate it right now.  When I read more about it, I wish I still did hair because I am ashamed to be part of the industry.

  • I think bringing some back and giving it away in vials is really weird.  I wouldn't take one from her, all it would do is make me really sad.

Maybe her intentions would be put to better use if she went down there and found a way to volunteer and help with the clean up.

  • I think it's kind of an odd idea to bring some back, but I don't see anything actually "wrong" with it.
  • Yeah, I'm not taking one either. This is the weirdest thing I've ever heard her come up with. I don't think she has any 'intentions' really. They love to travel, so it's a trip down there to see the oil. The whole thing just gets a big WTF from me.

  • I could maybe see, as a science teacher, bringing a jar back to show her classes or similar as part of a lesson on environmentalism or similar.

But to give out to her friends as gifts?  That's really weird and inappropriate, IMO.

I did hear about the raining oil thing.

There was an article in the Christian Science Monitor about how the raining oil thing doesn't scientifically make any sense. It might be raining oil, but it's not from Deepwater Horizon.

  • I think it's gross and morbid.  And not the same as a chunk of inert rock from a wall that humans built to separate themselves.  She's talking about bringing home a toxic substance whose existence where it doesn't belong is the basis for the tragedy.  Putting it in dozens more places where it doesn't belong isn't an improvement.  Besides, without some sort of authenticating certificate, she has no PROOF of what it is or where it came from.  So, I don't see how it helps preserve history.

Seeing the spill, cleaning the birds and whatnot - admirable.  Bringing the mess home - strange.

The scariest thing I've read is that the EPA is saying that it's unsafe for pregnant women to even live on the gulf coast right now.

What on earth would I do if I were pregnant and lived there?

I think that's where this thing came from. She did some really amazing things when she was a teacher. She was NASA certified and got to present moon rocks and did the Dawn thing and a million other cool things. I think her mindset is still there and she's just not thinking like a normal person.

I'd bet this would happen, granted I don't know your mom, but I have a few dozen friends and colleagues who have gone and they've told me it's the most depressing thing. It's like watching an entire coast line just be obliterated.

I am planning on going to the panhandle, but that is still so far from the marshes and the most heavily impacted areas.

  • I doubt very seriously if she can even get close enough to the beach to get any of the oil. That does seem pretty weird. I hate seeing the pics of the animals. I feel so bad for them. I also hate the fact that we can send people to the moon but can't seem to get someone down there and stop this leak!!

And the whole time, my future husband was in the room...... image image
