Tipping question

Hi guys! I've been on vacation in CA, hence the silence, and will be back at my computer in freezing cold Santiago next week. But for now, I have a boring etiquette question.

We had our CA reception last weekend, and the caterer (who is the owner of the business) just sent the final invoice and said that no tip is included or necessary but that if I choose to include one, he'll share it with his staff. On the day, I tipped him $100 to distribute among the 4 other staff members he had working our party. This follows stuff I've seen online about tipping $20-25 per waitperson.

However I've also seen sites saying to tip 15-20% of the total catering bill, which means I'd need to add another $200 or so to my final payment. Who's right, and what to I do? Thanks!
