Day of coordinator?

Just curious - are all you other brides using wedding coordinators / day-of coordinators?

We're three months shy of the wedding and up until now we've done all the planning ourselves. We don't have a big bridal party and only about 110ish guests but I'm worried about having to ask people to do stuff the day-of.

Anyway, would love to get your thoughts and suggestions. Are people just asking friends/family to drop off place cards and making sure the ceremony site is all set? Thanks much.

No, not yet. I actually have a trial set up for Thursday evening with a hair stylist based out of Hoboken and her partner who does make-up. I guess we'll see how it goes!

I don't think it's necessary unless you venue doesn't do any of the setup. I dropped everything at my venue the Monday prior to my Saturday wedding and discussed with them how I wanted it set up. The day of all my vendors showed up at my house the time they told me. I designated someone at the church to hand out the programs. The bridal attendant at the venue was at my becking call all night. She would give me a heads something would be occurring. Looking back I can't think of one reason why I would of needed one.

We are not using a DOC.. I don't really see the purpose of one, or at least in my situation. The venue will setup everything for me, and I am taking care of the timeline as far as scheduling vendors, etc. I'm too much of a control freak anyway, and I would never feel comfortable putting all that trust into a stranger to literally run my wedding day. I'd rather do it myself.

I am using a "wedding weekend" coordinator. She is planning the rehearsal dinner and the day-after brunch.  Our venue contact person has changed a few times, so to have a consistent person throughout has been vital to my sanity. Also for my sister's wedding last year I saw how much of the "little stuff" like fixing a broken button on my sister's dress, retrieving her jewlery from the hotel, errands, etc. fell to my parents and I wanted them to be able to kick back a bit for mine.

i felt no need for one. I had a fairly large wedding, well over 200 guest and even with my crazy travel schedule for work, I had no problems getting things done on time. the only thing that was really a pain was dropping off the OOT guest bags at the hotel and the menu cards/favors. But that took an hour. As far as the day of goes, all of my vendors basically told me when they needed to drop things off based on their experience. I told no one any times. Besides the bad weather that came the day of my wedding, I had not one thing go wrong.

@NJHousewife -- do you mind me asking who you are booked with? Are they in Jersey City?

I'm using one. My venue does do all the set up, but I'm too much of a type a personality to let it go. I need someone in there making sure all my DIY details are in order. I also hired one because I didn't want my mom or my MOH to be doing things. I wanted them to be able to relax with me and enjoy the reception. If something comes up, my DOC will be there. Plus with all that I'm spending on this day, I didn't want to have to think. I found a DOC that was more than within budget and well worth it.

I'm using Cindy Marotta from All about you events also.  I was a bridesmaid in a wedding where Cindy was PRICELESS including hiding the fact that the dj showed up just before the reception and BARELY had time to set up.  The bride knew NOTHING and was completely stress free.  I also work a million hours and Cindy is fabulous about reminding me when I need to get moving on certain things.  I have booked her as my planner and DOC but I know she does just one or the other too.

I am also thinking of one too.  I am type A as well, and want to do a lot of DIY decorations, so I'm not looking for a wedding PLANNER.

I want the reception to not look like an average reception hall and for it to be a reflection of our tastes.  I think that decorations in terms of linens, decorating chairs, putting up photos, or any other slightly complex decorations are out of the scope of our venue's responsibility.  I got the feeling that they only really put out the programs, place cards, and favors.  I will also have a bridal attendant and maitre d', so in terms of timing, I think that will be covered by the venue as well.

I also agree with other brides above, that I want my guests or family members to enjoy their time and not have to worry about setting up either.

Most of the venues we've visited said that DOCs won't be necessary, because they will handle the vendors.  But I am looking for someone who can just help set-up the decorations how I'd want them to look.  I'll let you all know who we end up choosing!

    Hello Brides!

I am a freelance event planner...I have experience with day-of-wedding coordination, fundraisers and social events. I just got married myself last month and am now back and looking to help other brides who are crazy busy or need creative help plan their weddings.

If any of you are looking for a wedding coordinator, whether it be from the day you get engaged onward, during the last crazy month or simply on the special day, I'd be happy to help you.

Congratulations!  Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Best,

I agree with your FI, it's a hard cost to justify being that most people don't use them and their service is redundant in most cases.  Your church and reception hall has people to take care of these things.  If you don't have an attendant or MD, then maybe it's worth looking into, but most places supply this service (because you are paying for it).

As for setup, our MD set up our favors, and menu's, and table numbers, signin board, escort cards, cardbox, etc.   We dropped all of that off a few days before to review last details.  Our florist set up the rest.  The mom's and MOH didn't have to do a thing on the day of.
