I seriously just listened to that video 5 times in a row and still cannot get my mouth to say "married" that way! The english language is a weird weird thing. I think I said all the other words grouped together on the quiz differently but those 3 all sound the same to me.

EXACTLY like that!!!!  Though my H is from OK so some of his accent has rubbed off on me.  My family now thinks I have an accent.

  • See the Berry Merry only works if you say don't say Berry like Bary

Here, I would say  "Berry, Barry and Bury" the same.
I know that Bury is wrong and generally try to correct it when speaking to someone outside of the state...

I know that Berry is probably wrong because well...just look at the spelling....but I've only heard it pronounced it's written ONCE in my entire life and it was a teacher's last name and a girl from CO originally who said it.

So if I don't analyze it, Berry sounds like Mary to me.....and Berry like Merry =Mary

if any of that makes sense, you win the internet.

<div>I'm with you on the Mary and merry but I pronounce marry like Mary. Which is why I didn't know how to answer the question in the quiz, because I pronounce the three words in two different ways whereas the quiz options were either "all pronounced the same" or "3 different way."</div>
  • I don't have an accent, but I have a good radio voice!
  • I got North Central, which makes sense since I've lived my whole life in MN... until now. I spent the last 2 years in TN for school. People in the south say "Oh, you don't have much of an accent" until I say Pop instead of Coke, or until I'm drunk, and then apparently my accent comes out and I sound Canadian. Great quiz!

Since my husband is from Wisconsin, I've mixed my accent with his a bit. Add in living in Boston and Connecticut both, and I got the "you don't have an accent." Though if I change my last answer to "bag = vague" (that's how my husband & his family pronounce it) it claims I have a Wiconsin acceent.

I did just spend all week with them though, so that might be why.

One question bothered me- Merry, Mary and Marry. Marry and Mary sound the same to me, but Merry is different- that wasn't an avaliable answer
  • my mom says bag like vague. She also says Salza and Maryo instead of Mario.

  • LOL I got the Midland, which is accurate to where I live. I never think I have an accent, but people I met in college from other areas of the country said I have a "Midwest twang," whatever that means.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Accents : My Boston accent is a novelty here in AZ.  People think it makes me sound "tough" or something. I've noticed people in Rhode Island have the weirdest accents among New Englanders.  I did a linguistics paper in college on the Boston accent.  Oddly enough, people in northern NH have stronger Boston accents than southern NH.  The hypothesis is that southern NH folks try to turn down the annoying vowels to differentiate themselves from their neighbors to the south.

I live in Phoenix, but I was born in the Boston area and I LOVE a New England accent because it gives me warm fuzzy feelings of my family there.

Lol, I guess I hadn't thought that out.  I suppose I wasn't helpful with the merry rhyming with berry thing since you would pronounce those the same no matter what your accent is!  Oops

Haha. No worries! It makes for interesting converstation between my fiance and I. We both have the same accent so we've now spent about an hour trying to decide how you would pronounce berry and hairy differently.

I got 100 northeast which makes sense since I'm from north jersey. However I've never thought of myself as having a "jersey" accent. People are always asking me why I dont have the stereotypical jersey accent. Althoigh, having a FI who is a native Californian, I absolutely hear the differences in how he pronounces things. He definitely says "don" and "dawn" the same and I don't. Also, "merry", "Mary", and "marry" are three distinctly different sounding words to me. One thing I know I say "jersey" is Mario. I say it with a hard "a" sound. I also can't pronounce "drawer" correctly. Other than that I really think I have a nondescript accent. Very interesting and I'm absolutely making my FI take it too!

  • Mine said 100% Philadelphia.  Which is correct since I grew up right outside of Philly.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I got Midland.  I grew up in Ohio when I was little - and moved to Texas when I was about 9.  Everyone in Texas thinks I sound funny, and everyone in my family still up north thinks I talk funny.  I don't blend in with anyone!  Interesting quiz though!

Do you associate with people in CA? When I moved to Nor Cal, I I started to raise the tone of my voice at the end  of sentences (like when you are asking a question) as they do in CA. My friends noticed it and we all thought it was funny because none of them speak like that. However, i was covering So. Cal for work and talking to people from that area most of the day and I apparently picked it up from them. Though, I think it's pretty much gone now.
