Re: Dear May Brides

  • Well I am getting married at a beautiful country club. It's a small wedding an my budget is pretty small so I've had to get very creative. My venue allows us to bring alcohol, so my wedding is BYOB. I hope people don't bring too much alcohol because I don't want everyone all sloppy drunk. And luckily my venue will lend you a jacket if you don't have one so I don't have to worry about guests being under dressed.

MamaBear, I put on my invitations that everyone needed to wear a black jacket with tie and women could wear a floor length dress as long as it is not blue, creme, ivory, or white. It's probably not too late to send out some type of post card telling people so that they know what to wear.

Oh yeah. I mean, at first we thought about making drink coupons to give people, but I thought they might try to pull a fast one and take tickets from others. So I figured, bring what you want to drink and we'll provide mixers. Saved us so much money!

I didn't want people to think it was rude of me to tell them what to wear. So instead, the venue will just provide something if they don't meet the standards. I have an attendant who will be checking everyone out as they arrive. Oh crud, I just realize I have 1 more attendant gift to buy. Ugh.

  • We are having a Vegas destination wedding to save money both on the decor and I make sure the guest list is small. We are doing two drink tickets for our restaurant reception. I figure since the ceremony is at 11 am on a Tuesday and the reception starts at noon two drink tickets should suffice for the guests? We are only expecting about 25 people.

  • Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Stop. Seriously? You all are going to talked about behind your back like it is going out of style. You should never EVER have your guests pulling out their wallet at your wedding. Would you invite your friends over for dinner and expect them to pay for their meal? I pray your answer is no. It's the exact sane thing. You are hosting your guests. It is a reception because you are receiving them. You are thanking them for bearing witness to your wedding vows. Next, you should not tell them what to wear. They are adults, they can figure out themselves what to wear. Now I bet someone is going to pipe up saying they're having a potluck. RUDE!!! Way to be an ungracious bride.

Think about a picnic style. You might be inviting them over, but it's similar to people bringing a dish to pass. Plus, why would you really want to pay for everyone's alcohol when you don't even know if they are going to drink?

You should never EVER have your guests pulling out their wallet at your wedding. In case you missed what I wrote, I'm NOT making them pull out their wallet. They're just bringing their own drinks with them. If they dont want alcohol, they dont have to bring any. At least I'm not having a cash bar! Would you invite your friends over for dinner and expect them to pay for their meal? People "go dutch" all the time when going out together. This isn't a new concept. And yes, sometimes, when people come over to my house, they bring a dish and we share. I pray your answer is no. It's the exact sane thing. You are hosting your guests. It is a reception because you are receiving them. You are thanking them for bearing witness to your wedding vows. I'm just monitoring what they do and assist if they don't figure it out. They are adults, they can figure out themselves what to wear. And clearly you don't know FIs family, because they can be a bit.. um.... casual, at events. Now I bet someone is going to pipe up saying they're having a potluck. • Well I'll try to turn this post to a more positive note. I'm having a wedding/reception at a botique hotel in downtown Houston. It's a Persian-American wedding so some additional elements have been added. As for alcohol, since many of my guests don't drink, but some do and I didn't wish to be charged $35/person for all the ones who don't we decided on paying for the first 2 hours of drinks and then turning it into a cash bar for those who want to continue. I figure it's the best of both worlds. Music will be a mixture of American classics and Persian dance songs. I'm looking forward to it!
  • Hi All,
We are having a small wedding in Jupiter, FL on May 11th. I am contemplating hiring a wedding coordinator although we didn't budget for it, but I'm feeling really overwhelmed with all of the details that need to be worked out. We are having 33 guests(11 kids) & most of them are flying in from out of town. Does anyone have any experience with hiring a coordinator a month before the wedding?
