Alaskan cruise?

Hi everyone!

Has anyone taken an Alaskan cruise, or is anyone planning one in the near future?  If so, what company did you go with?  We are thinking about taking one for our honeymoon.  Any suggestions/ideas are greatly appreciated!

  • alaska cruise is a like a floating rest home for the elderly i would rather put a gun to my head LOL
id say you could have a lot of "bedroom time" since its so boring there would not be much else to do.. but with those terrible "rooms" and beds like a prison... yikes.
i would never go on another cruise if you paid me.
saint barts, cancun 5 star all inclusive, south of france saint tropez..monaco..
maybe thats why celebs and the wealthy only vacation in the most beautiful places.
But not all of us gals can afford that right hehe
you should look into PALACE resorts in mexico
5 star. and much much better than a cruise.
i like all inclusive because there are no hidden costs like on a cruise.
people think they are saving going on cruises but really every time i went
its such a kill joy to see all the poor people who work on those ships like slaves..
LOL im so anti cruise right? :-P

I think an Alaskan cruise sounds like an incredible experience!  I'd also love to go on a trip to Iceland in the hopes of seeing the Northern Lights, or maybe Finland where they have private double bedroomed glass roofed chalets, so you can lie in bed and watch the Northern Lights in the sky above you *sigh*

If someone comes on here and says something like "We have a budget of _____ and we are trying to decide what to do" then I am all for telling them that I prefer AI's over cruises. BUT, she came on here asking about Alaskan Cruises. And your advice was both rude and unasked for. Luckily we have great experienced cruisers on here like CMGr and others that are willing to help and be resources on this type of thing. That being said, my dad and I just talked about taking an Alaskan cruise yesterday and how amazing it would be. Alaskan cruises do not have to be boring, neither do any other type of cruise. Your assumption was very pretentious and ridiculous.

OP, please listen to the other posters and not her. You will have a great time!

  • I am going to Alaska for my honeymoon, but we are not taking a cruise.  I've never been on one, so I can't say what type of folks take them and what the activity level is.  For some people, after running around getting everyting ready for the wedding, relaxing on the deck and just watching the glaciers go by may be a dream come true!

We are actually going to be camping on Kodiak Island.  My coworkers were HORRIFIED when they heard that I am spending my honeymoon camping in Alaska, surrounded by grizzly bears.  But it has always been my dream to see the Kodiak bears, my fiancee picked it just for me!  So one person's nightmare can be another person's dream come true!

If you decide you are not sold on the cruise, there are plenty of other great ways to see Alaska.  There are quite a few train lines across the state that look gorgeous, I am bummed that we will not have time to work them into our trip!  There are also cruises of different lengths, so if you are not 100% on the cruise, you could book like a 3 night cruise, and then rent a car and drive yourself around the rest of the time.

If you are looking for other options for a mountain honeymoon, Glacier National Park in Montana is beyond gorgeous.  Have a great time!!!

  • We are going on an Alaskan Cruise! We had to go with Carnival because of the dates. I am back to school Sept. 5, and our wedding is Aug. 24, so our dates were not flexible. I am so excited for it. It's our first cruise.

  • We are taking an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon this July!

We first went to a travel agency and were very disappointed. The travel agent seemed set on us going on a Carribean cruise and kept shooting down an Alaskan cruise for various reasons. He found us some prices that were WAY too high for us and told us that Alaskan cruises were probably out of our price range. However, we were still determined and I started doing my own research.

We found an amazing website.... vacationstogo.com. I would highly recommend taking a look at it. If you purchase directly from the cruise line's website you'll pay a LOT more. Vacationstogo.com can also find you a lot of discounts. For instance, my fiance and I saved $1000 on our trip because I received a teacher's discount. This discount was never mentioned by the travel agent we visited with or on any of the cruise websites we visited.

We ended up booking a 10 day cruise/land trip. The cruise will start in Vancouver and take us up through the interior passage. Then we'll stop near Anchorage and take a train to Denali National Park and stay there for 2 nights in a lodge. The entire trip (not including airfare or excursions) ended up being around $2000. This was an amazing deal, especially considering the ridiculous prices we found on the cruise websites and from our agent.

I would suggest you look around on vacationstogo.com and if you have any questions call one of their cruise specialists. The lady who I spoke with was amazing and SO helpful. She's continued to stay in contact with us and has been so helpful in answering all of our questions.

    Best of luck!!

Honestly, to me a Mexico resort is what sounds boring. We could have spent the same amount of money going to Mexico as we spent going to Alaska. And that was suggested to us so we did look into both options. However, I chose not to because my fiance and I have no interest in that at all. Zero. But am I going to try to make someone feel bad for their vacation choice and try to sound like *I'm* so much better than them just because I have different interests? No. Because unlike you, I'm not a jerk. :)
  • I've never been on an Alaskan cruise, but as far as cruise lines go, I'd definitely recommend Norwegian.  We went to Bermuda with NCL for our honeymoon, and it was amazing.  NCL has great food and lots of fun activities on the ship.  Whatever you end up doing, I hope you have an amazing time. :)

I work for an Alaskan cruise line. I know a lot of people do take the Holland America and Princess line tours and love them. There will be a lot of retiree-age people. My boss told me last year that the average age of people coming to Alaska is around 55-60 and I believe it. There are a few younger people but not very many.

Personally, my husband and I would not do a full tour including the land portion. However, that is just us. We prefer to sight-see and explore on our own, plan our own schedule and change it up last minute rather than being tied into one thing.
  • I did one last summer on Royal Caribbean. We loved it! My biggest advice is to make sure that you take a jacket. It gets cold fast. You go to bed and it's 75. Wake up and it's 40. Also, for anyone planning a cruise, I recommend packing motion sickness medicine if you're at all prone to motion sickness. Dramamine works, but it can make you drowsy. If you talk to your doctor before you go, they may be able to prescribe something without that side-effect. I've done two cruises: Alaska and the Caribbean. The rolling was A LOT worse for the Alaska cruise, and two people in our group got really sick. I took dramamine as soon as the rolling started, and I had no problem.

  • I lived in Alaska for 10 years and my FI and I just got back from a trip to see friends up there last week. Alaska is beautiful.  I would recommend that if you take a cruise try to get off the boat and see as much as you can. Take a train up to Denial like PP said.  You will get see another side of Alaska then just the coast and hopefully see Mt. McKinley! If you are hikers try to climb a mountain or go on a plain ride to see the tops of the mountains it's breathtaking and you can see a lot more this way.

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

@CMGr I've had no problems with them whatsoever. The only nightmare I had with the planning process was visiting with the travel agent who had 20+ years of experience behind him. I wouldn't recommend someone blindly trust a travel agent OR a rep from the website. You're going to run into people who do a poor job anywhere you go so it's important to just use common sense when planning a trip.
  • My parents have been on two AK cruises and one of my friends did it for her honeymoon. They all loved it and I believe they went on Princess. But one of the trips my parents may have taken was with Holland. You have to see which cruise line offers dates that work for you and hit the locations you want to go. Princess has several beautiful hotels in Denali where there is a lot to see and do. Just pack in layers, take good walking shoes (and hiking boots depending on what you want to do) and a rain coat too. It rains a lot in the summer there. When I was in AK end of July, there was actually snow and in Denali they actually had a blizzard with white out conditions. I didn't pack any hats (and couldn't find my gloves but there are stores in every town that sell winter stuff two. Also don't forget to pack the eye mask, depending on the curtains on where you stay, you will need them to help you sleep since it's daylight almost 24/7 in the summer

@CMGr...have you seen many kids on AK cruises? We're considering taking an AK cruise next summer with our newly minted offspring.

I know some cruises trend to be very adults-only. So we'd hate to be the only couple with a kid.

  • As someone who lives in Seattle and sees the cruise ships come and go. They can't be that boring if there are so many people going on these cruises. Also if you are going to start or end in Seattle I'd recommend a day or two here to check out the city there's plenty to do here too.
