FIL was getting his house ready for sale so he gave DH a few things. Now BIL is buying the house (I think there is some creative financing here) and he's asked for the stuff back. Would you give it back?

They are planning to rent their current home.  I hope it works out, but boy it looks bad.
  • What?! Your BIL and SIL are as maddening as your MIL, 6.  You are a saint to deal with them like you do.

These things were given to your DH by his father.  BIL is beyond rude to ask for them back.

  • Sounds like some sh*t that would go down in my IL family.  Ha.

  • You know what?  I voted no, but I'm changing my vote.  I vote yes.  B/c you are going to hear about this every damn time you see them for the rest of your lives.  Unless it's like a gold bar, it is just not worth the damn hassle of being right.

But I would make sure BIL knew he was astoundingly rude.  And I wouldn't be passive aggressive about it either, I"d be a huge b!tch when giving it back.

Why isn't there a "hell no" option?
  • I voted No But, because I'm nosy, what types of things are we talking about? Lawn care tools? Furniture?

  • depends on what it is and what it means to me (i.e. is it worth fighting over)

yes, it's rude of BIL, but if it was something like a microwave, and it's something that doesn't have sentimental value and I already had a perfectly good microwave, it wouldn't be worth fighting about.

if it was my great grandfather's watch or something of the like, then i'd probably tell him to go f himself.

    I voted no...
I know theres some 'stuff' we got because of buying the house from family we wouldn't ahve ended up w/ otherwise (mostly all of the tools in the garage)...which is why I"ve been giving crap to my sister now that she has her own house.

I do think "does this have $ value, useful value, or sentimental value" would oclor things for me though

The house had a massive deck.  FIL had it outfitted with 2 high top tables and 2 regular tables and chairs.  He also had a plastic storage shed and a wooden shed.  Our deck furniture is 14 years old and starting to rust so we took one table, 6 chairs, and the plastic shed.  The other table, chairs, and shed are still there.

Years ago FIL gave us his snow blower because they were generally gone during the winter.  If they were home the neighbor would plow for them.  Our new house doesn't NEED the snow blower, but it was nice to be able to hit the sidewalk for the cu-de-sac.  When we offered the snow blower back BIL asked for the other stuff too.

  • Ask to see where in his contract that the lawn furniture was specified as part of the house purchase.

I just a friendly gal looking for options.

  • Yeah, no.  BIL can use the deck furniture that's left and supplement with his own. Same for the shed.  Your BIL certainly has entitlement issues.

I said yes, just so you wouldn't have to hear about it. But I think I change my vote to no. It's nothing he *needs*.

And WTF at your FIL selling that house to him. ugh.

i vote no. that's ridiculous he even asked.
  • Nope...it was a gift to you.  BIL can come up with even more creative financing to get deck furniture.

Unless your vote is to give it back and make sure BIl hears about it every damn time you see him for the rest of your lives, I think this is foolhardy.

i'm curious about what FIL promised him that he thought it was appropriate to even ask for the stuff back. it's a very bizarre thing to ask for IMO.

I would be shocked if FIL said he could have the stuff back.  We've had it for a month+ now and FIL is incredibly fair and even stevens about things.   FIL would be more likely to transport the old stuff to BIL and buy us something new to keep the peace.

Well, shoot.  I think we have a winner.  I'm changing my answer to this.  ;)
