Invitation/Save the Date Etiquette

So my fiance and I are disagreeing about sending out save the dates. He thinks we should just send out the invitations earlier and skip save the dates altogether. Thoughts? What's the protocol?

You can skip the STDs if you want, but don't send out invitations any earlier than 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

I sent our STDs about 7 months before my wedding but its optional. I happened to get married on a very busy weekend in my town, so I wanted to get the hotel information out to everyone.

Just remember that STD= invitation

You can certainly skip the STDs as other people have mentioned. A STD is a relatively new idea, so they are certainly not mandatory.  But, if you skip them, don't send your invites out any earlier.  No more than 8 weeks before the wedding.
