Newly Engaged!

The moment I've been dreaming about since I was a little girl happened about a week ago. My boyfriend and I were away for the weekend celebrating our anniversary and I was so excited just to get away even if only for two days. Friday the 21st was our anniversary and our first day away. After a fun filled day we got ready for a romantic dinner out. Dinner was great, but I was starting to notice Mike, my boyfriend,was getting a little more awkward by the minute. After dinner Mike suggested we take a walk on the beach even though it was pretty chilly. I threw a hoodie over my dress because he was being so persistent and then we headed out. About 5 minutes into our walk our casual talk took a very serious turn and next thing I knew Mike was on one knee! He pulled out a beautiful ring that literally seemed to sparkle in the moonlight. I of course said yes although in complete shock. The day we got back from our mini vaca we both brought our parents together for dinner to announce our engagement. Everyone was so surprised because Mike didn't tell anyone, but they were all so supportive and happy for us which was the icing on the cake. I couldn't ask for a more perfect proposal or family reaction. 

I'm so excited to start planning our dream wedding. We plan on having a two year engagement because we have a few things we need to get in order first, plus I don't handle stress well, so I figure two years gives me ample time to plan at ease. Right now I'm beginning to focus on planning the engagement party. Also, I'm trying to find a two year wedding planning timeline, most of the ones I find are for one year engagements. If anyone knows any good timelines for longer engagements please share them below, thank you!

Also, you shouldn't plan your own engagement party. It should be thrown in your honor by someone else if they offer to do so.

We were engaged for 2 years and just didn't start planning until a year out. Ditto KeptInStitches about the engagement party. That's not a party you should be throwing for yourself.

Agreed - please don't host your own engagement party. It will make you look very silly to do so. Engagement parties aren't required. 

FI and I will be engaged just short of 2 years. I took my time browsing around wedding stuff (like TK) but didn't really start planning anything until about 18 months out. I did "bigger" vendors first - church, reception venue, DJ, photographer, and I'm down to two caterers at just under a year out. The best part about a long engagement is being able to relax and take your time.

Thank you. Nail polish is by a brand called finger paints, I got it as Sally Beauty Supply, but unfortunately the color label has fallen off. Also, thanks, but I won't be throwing my party my mother is hosting, I'm just helping plan because I've been to many engagement parties that are like mini weddings and although nice, its not want me or my fiancé want, too much fuss for us.

Thank you! Your post was very helpful because although just engaged everyone wants to start throwing in their two sense about when I should do what. I figured that I'd give myself a year and half to plan and right now I'm just draw wedding inspiration from different places. My mother is actually hosting our engagement party (a detail i left out), I'm just helping her plan it, so it doesn't end up too over the top like I've seen at many other engagement parties.

If your having a longer engagement just go off of the regular 1 year engagement planners.  But if your like me I'm going to do things in my own time fashioned.  Since its year 2013  anything goes and who's following the tradtional wedding rules anyway.  If you want to plan your own engagement party go ahead.
