Ties between type of food and wedding party attire??

Hello Ladies! My fiance and I have settled on having our absolute favorite food catered for our wedding, Moe's Southwest Grill, they do tacos, fajitas, and taco salads.  My sister (MOH) today made a comment to me that b/c we are having "finger food" that having my BMs in long dresses is overkill.  We are getting married at Lydia Mountain Lodge in Stanardsville, VA.  It is a beautiful rustic setting, but in early October will be a little chilly when the sun goes down, and I don't want my ladies getting cold, in addition to the fact that I love the look of long dresses at weddings.  Would love to hear some of your thoughts, did you let your menu dictate the attire of your wedding party?  Or did you say I want my ceremony to have this look and the reception is just a huge party afterwards?

Thanks!!

Re: Ties between type of food and wedding party attire??

  • I wouldn't really say that your menu should dictate your BP attire. However, both your menu and your attire (as well as all other aspects of your wedding) should have the same level of formality.

For example, Moe's (I used to live in VA so I'm very familiar with their food) is definitely an informal - and tasty - food choice (we're not talking a plated filet mignon here). It would be odd to have that be your wedding food when you're having your BMs in floor-length ball gowns and you've invited your guests on very formal stationary. It just wouldn't jive together, KWIM?

Now, I don't see anything wrong with having your BMs wear long dresses for a more informal wedding - but they should probably be of a simpler style and material. Something simple and chiffon, for example, would fit into that feel very nicely.

  • I agree with allispain.  The formality of your food should be equal to the overall formality of your wedding.  For instance, one wouldn't serve ribs and chicken wings when having a black tie affair in a large ornate ballroom.  As one wouldn't serve filet mignon and lobster while having a backyard casual wedding.

I do think there are plenty of less formal long dresses to choose from.  Think chiffon with little to no bling/accents.  I would stay away from long satin numbers and large full skirts or ballgowns or even trumpet/mermaid style dresses.

  • Most of my ladies have asked for a heavier material as chiffon can be less than forgiving, and my idea is a VERY simple A-line dress in something flattering.

  • I want to get married near the end of Summer and to have an outdoor ceremony and the reception might be inside or outdoors in a tent.  I know what kind of colours/feel I want for my BM's but as for the material and length I am not that picky on and will go with what will be best and most comfortable for them on the day.

  • I don't think it's an issue if other parts of your wedding are casual too. I wore a long gown and my husband wore a suit, but we got married outside and had a pig roast BBQ. We really liked the mix of "high" and "low" in our reception. It looks like your venue is fairly casual, so you should be fine. Wear what you're comfortable in!
  • I really don't think it's an issue. I think Moe's would be fun and the only time the bridesmaids will stand out is during the ceremony. If you want Moes then I say go for it.
  • In your case I wouldn't worry too much.  It already sounds like you are doing a relatively simple BM dress and the food and venue are already a more casual envirnoment.  As PP have mentioned doing a BBQ reception that is Black Tie would be strange, but it sounds like your choices will all work perfectly together!
