food help

what are you ladies having for food at your reception?
if i do a buffet is it acceptable to do it church style? meaning 30 or 40 diffrent dishes  that have maybe 15 servings in each and just let everyone choose what they want?

    We are serving the following:

    Cocktail hour:
Fruit cascade; various cheeses with crackers and ciabatta breads
3 cheese spinach/artichoke dip served in martini glasses with pita chips
    lump crab cakes
    sausage sage stuffed mushrooms
    Dinner:
Steak oscar with asparagus, lump crab and bearnaise sauce
Chicken in a light sage cream sauce with prosciutto
Whipped masher and sweet potato bar with cheddar cheese, bacon, sour cream, chives, whipped butter, brown sugar, marshmallows and candied pecans
oven roasted seasonal veggies with herbs d' provence
Wild rice with shitake mushrooms & toasted almonds
    Dessert:
Cake and ice cream sundae station

I think your idea of having lots of dishes with small amounts could be good but it could also make it harder for your guests to choose what they want or be frustrated if something they saw and wanted to try wasn't available by the time they got through the line.  Just my thoughts.
  • I think your idea is fine.

</div><div>Yeah, I kind of agree with this.  I've never heard of church style before, are people supposed to just take a few bites of several dishes or full out meals from one dish?  It doesn't seem fair that the first table to go gets to choose from 30 different meals, but that the last table to go gets to choose from whatever everyone else didn't want.</div><div>
</div><div>I'm too lazy to type ours out, but here it is.  I haven't decided on appetizers yet, and our wedding cake is going to be our dessert. =]</div><div>

  • thered be like 30-40 diffrent dishes each having say 20 servings and each person would take a little of this or a little of that like pot luck dinner but without the part of having everyone bring something. and with less than 90 guests i think there will be enough but its just an idea right now...

  • Since you have a smaller number of guests, I think your idea will work out just fine.  I would love it if I were a guest and had that much to choose from!  Is there a way to have a few plates of the more "popular" items, just in case?

We're doing a buffet, but we really haven't made any of the final food decisions.  We get three entree choices, a garden salad, a potato, a veggie, and rolls.  We will provide the apps for cocktail hour on our own, and we'll probably do party platters from Sam's Club: fruit, veggies, cheese/meat and crackers.
