Skype Shower?!...

Things I learned this weekend... there is such a thing as a skype shower....

My Mom's BFF is hosting a bridal shower for a Bride. But the Bride will not be coming to MN to attend the shower (reason: she doesn't want to travel before the wedding). Instead Mom's BFF shipped all the presents/decorations and some sweet food to the Bride in North Carolina. All the invited ladies will meet at BFFs house (will all the fixings) in MN and skype the bride in NC while she opens the gifts and play games.

Am I the only person that finds this to be a little ridiculous??

Haha... It is pretty funny.  I actually had a friend whose family all lives in Michigan and they wanted to throw a "webcam shower" for him and his fiance!  They also weren't going to be able to get over to Michigan for a shower before the wedding (6 month total planning period) and neither had any family in Minnesota to throw them a shower.  They shipped all the gifts and shower snacks over and had them open them via webcam.  Crazy... but apparently it worked out pretty well!

    That is weird.

Perhaps ridiculous was too strong of a word. But it doesn't sit well with me.

I would be more understanding if she had a legitimate reason but she doesn't want to make 2 trips (one for wedding, one for shower) .... well then don't have a shower. They are by no means a must.

That is very odd, but nice that her BFF and family did that for her.

As odd as it sounds, it's actually quite common now. I find it very disrespectful to everyone - but there are times when the family really just wants to throw a shower... My one question would be, who was it that mentioned the idea of a Skype shower in the first place? Was it the Bride? As a guest I wouldn't know what to think.

I think it sounds pretty funny as well although I also wouldn't be a fan!

I could see situations where it could be a really good idea but this prolly isnt one of them. I do think it is strange that she just doesn't want to travel. I agree that she doesn't need a shower so this seems like a lot to do to be able to throw her one.

I could see it working for a baby shower though....when the mom shouldn't travel at that stage in pregnancy - although I still think it is a bit weird.

This is the "church ladies" shower... and I know she doesnt' want to travel twice for the wedding and shower, but still wanted the shower so she presented the skype idea.

Haha, does she participate in the games and stuff?  I can see this being so silly in my head.. but yea, totally rubs me the wrong way that she just didn't want to travel so suggested the skype thing herself.

Weird I have never heard of this!! I can imagine this may become increasingly common as technology moves forward

I'm with you guys, if she can't make it, then don't have a shower.  That just sounds weird.

Yea, as a guest I'd be miffed that SHE suggested it! My brother who is in China will skype with the family once in awhile but that's just for fun... and he's in CHINA - This is just ridiculous!

As far as I know the Bride will participate in the games... but I didn't ask what games or what they had planned.

I'd understand doing something like that if you're halfway across the world from each other, or extreme circumstances prevent you from getting there. Using Skype for this stuff is actually pretty common now, especially for corporate meetings.

My aunt and uncle were involved in selecting a new rabbi for their synagogue and actually interviewed prospective rabbis using Skype.

HmMm that's interesting. I like the fact that they wanted to try to throw her something and send her gifts, but to get everyone else together to watch her on skype is weird.  I guess I would have rather gone without a shower.
  •  Most brides will not request a shower, so if it was a bride who requested it, one may have a thought.  But if these lovely people would like to give a bride a shower and find that a skype shower is the most efficient way to do it and the bride lives in another state (remember it does get expensive to travel) why would you be so judgemental?
