I was just about to post a review of my engagement photographer-- I used Desmond Charles photography (www.desmondhcarles.com) and he was fantastic. Our pictures were gorgeous. Not sure if he's in your price range, but it's worth checking out, I think he has package prices on his web site. See my post above for a full review.

MIke with MP Photography is who we are using. We wanted the same kind of style that you were looking for on a budget. He offers four packages and they are laid out on his site. We went with the second best (Package Three) and feel that for $2400 there is NO WAY we could find anyone with that kind of talent not to mention all he gives you (albums, 400 printed 4x6 etc) Really the ONLY thing I'd say worried me a little is that he shoots alone with no second photog or assistant. But after meeting with him and looking through all his albums I'm 100% confident in our choice. He works out of Palo Alto but will travel all over the bay area. Good luck!!
