A 12 y.o. girl from my state disappeared and was found a few days later with a registered sex offender in Florida. The guy had known her since she was 5, and according to the radio the two "had sexual relations" and were planning to marry. The girl's father said that her mother had died a few months ago and he was expecting the girl to be flown home soon.

Whaaaaaat? Y'all, you tell me that your CHILD turns up three states away with a sex offender, and you are not in the car on your way to get her that minute? I cannot even imagine how I would feel in this situation, but y'all can bet I wouldn't be all "Well, I imagine she'll be back soon."

Was there any indication of why he couldn't go get her? Is he on parole or something?

Yes, there seems to be a ton of WTF, but then again, there may be a LOT more going on legally and with CPS and state custody than has been made public.

I had not considered the whole parole/custody angle, and unfortunately it doesn't sound like it's out of the question in this story. I heard about this on the radio driving in this morning, so I went and found the newpaper article--it's just so sad:
