20% service fee question

Seems every casino/resort charges the 20% service fee for receptions; I'm curious if that money actually goes to the workers?  Working on the budget and trying to figure out if I should include extra budget for tipping all the servers, bartenders, etc.

I think you should budget "just in case" tipping. We asked our wedding planner and our reception manager if the workers were taken care of, and she told us it was included in the labor fee, but they went above and beyond that we did a little extra.

I would think the contract should say what portion of the service fee is shared with the service staff. I agree with jcc, you should include additional money to your budget for additional gratuity if you feel the service goes above and beyond.

Good ideas, I'll ask them to write it into the contract; we're doing that this week so I'll make sure it works out to 20% for the workers even if it raises the contract price just so I don't have to deal with it later or worry about it.

I am so glad you asked this question! I was just starting to notice the fees on sites and contracts that were available for download and it was making me kinda cranky.

I hate the word FEE and SERVICE FEE just makes it worse because I do not understand what it is for most of the time and 20% is a lot in my eyes...I mean thats more than double tax... *shrug* ...

If you find out any more about the service fee....let me know! I am oh so curious.

Will post back once we nail down the contract and figure out what goes to whom; we're renting out a restaurant for the night and there will be all the restaurant's normal service staff there so it would be a nightmware trying to tip them all the day of the event.

Wow...that sounds fantastic....well, I hope the tipping situation doesnt end up all complicated...hopefully they understand that they should have something like that figured out in the contract to make the event as smooth as possible for their guests.

When we were look at Restaurants at MB it wasn't called a service fee, just gratuity.  I think our China Grill contract says gratuity.

Ok, good to go, the Mandalay / Mix buy out contract does specify it is a 20% gratuity and I got them to confirm it does go to the staff in email.

Are you the one who had Fleur de Lys first and then they hit you at the last minute with the remodel?  I remember reading about it.  FI and I looked there and China Grill when we went to see Mix and they confirmed they didn't even know what FdL was going to look like yet.  I'm going to spend the next 11 months worrying they will decide to remodel Mix with little notice. :(

Don't worry!  I actually may have worked out better for us.  China Grill is a much bigger venue and MB has been nothing but accomodating since it all happened.  After a bit of stress, it ended up working out fine.
