Tastings - Before booking?

So we are stuck between 2 Venues.... Venutis and Abbington.  Both are beautiful and Italian.

One way we could chose is to have a tasting.  But most places only offer this after you book with them.  Has anyone ever had a tasting before you booked the venue?

Venutis has a restaurant, so we went there to eat, but I wonder how the portion size and food quality compares to the banquet portion.

    I can't imagine booking without a tasting if you're local.  I'm getting married in Vegas, but am familiar with the location I chose.

    My caterer did a tasting with me, FI and parents before we had to put any money down.
