mandatory to have cake?

We are having our wedding at the Renaissance and our package includes a dessert course. In fact, I think one of our options is some kind of cake. Is it COMPLETELY necessary to have an expensive wedding cake? We are considering just not even doing it. Any thoughts or alternative ideas are welcome!

I too am not having a cake.  We are having 4 different kinds of petit fours.  Only some of my older family members are upset - - no one else seems to care.

For us cake was NOT necessary.  We had a small one to cut but offered mini cupcakes, mini creme brulee, italian cookies etc....We had great feedback saying how much they loved getting to sample so many different things.

No. We are serving artisan cheeses, fresh fruit, and petit fours as our 4th course. I don't like wedding cake because it's always 2 days old and a bit stale, so it was never something I wanted for our celebration.
