Well I would ask your soon to be FI if he even wants the wedding revolved around the military.  My H is in the Navy and didn't want to make it a military wedding.  He wore a tux like his GM, and the only way you would guess it was a military wedding is that we asked our service members guests to wear their dress uniforms.

If he does want to go that route, there are many different aspects involved.  There are brides on this board from all the branches, and can help you with different ideas.  Your hardest part will probably be securing a date, and I for one can tell you that even when you think your date is set, you'll probably have to change it.  But once you are engaged, decide with your FI a ballpark idea of when you want to get married, and what kind of wedding you want.  Then go from there.

dnbeach said it all. This is definitely up to you and your FI. You don't need to have a military wedding if you don't want to. My FI is also in the Navy and he didn't want anything military related in our wedding, nor did I. He and his GMs will be wearing tuxes as well, they didn't want to wear their uniforms. Whatever way you choose to do your wedding, I'm sure it'll be great and there are a lot of people here that can help you out. Also, the date is always the most important. We had to change our a couple of times due to deployment schedules. You 2 just need to sit down and figure out what you both want. Good luck! :)

Okay good start.  When you start to look into  venues, ask if you have military clauses, and what they will do for you if you have to change the date.  Our reception site wouldn't refund the deposit, but they would move it to a different date if we had to reschedule, which was fine for us because we knew we wanted the reception there.

Your next step would be start making a tentative guest list, and determine if you want to have a small wedding, or a big one.  Once you have a good idea of your guest list size you can start looking for venues that can accommodate your size.  Military clauses are important though with how often things change in the military.
