save the dates and invitations

I'm sort of special ed with weddings, don't have a lot of personal resources to ask... how far in advance should the save the dates and the invites go out? I'm not sure how soon they go out, a lot of my guests will have to travel, so I want people to have plenty of time to plan... any ideas?

    I think it's typical for STDs to go out about 6 months before the wedding, UNLESS it is destination, on a holiday, or you have A LOT of OOTs....then you should do sooner.  Invitations are usually sent out about 2 months in advance, and RSVPs are usually requested a 3-4 weeks prior to the wedding date so you have time to call people who haven't responded and get #s to your caterer in time (check and see when your caterer requests the final head count).HTH!

    I agree with pp.  My wedding isn't until September, but I sent out my STD's at Christmas with my Christmas cards and saved some postage.
