Affordable hotel reception venues

Hi all!  My fiance and I are planning our wedding for July 2010.  We're both from out of town (me-Iowa, him-Wichita) and the vast majority of our guests will be traveling.  Because of this, we'd prefer to find a hotel for our reception.  We've looked at a few, but it seems we can't find one for less than $15,000 (some even more!).  We'd like to keep our cost for the reception alone around $10-12,000, which is about $50/person, food and alcohol.  Any suggestions or recommendations?  Thanks!

Where at in KC are you thinking? The Holiday Inn on the South side of Olathe (next to Olathe Med) is fairly cheap for a hotel (I believe). We looked into it, but I cannot remember what the exact costs were. Try checking them out, if interested!

I have about the same budget that you do.  I am having my reception at the Ball Conference Center in Olathe.   If you refer to an ad in one of the KC Wedding guide books you will get a discount off of the rental price.  You can also choose your own caterer from a list of preferred caterers that they have on their website.  Another plus, and big money saver, is the fact that you can bring in your own alcohol.  The ballroom itself if very large and can accommodate 300.  There is also a big lobby when you walk into the building that is going to be great for a cocktail hour.  I know you said you're looking into a hotel, but it might be worth checking out.  It's also a fairly new place and the people have been great to work with, so far anyway.  There is only one event that can take place at a time there.  Also, there are a ton of hotels really close to it, I mean seriously close like a minute or two.  It is located almost right behind Olathe Med Center and there are several hotels to choose from.  I looked into the Olathe Holiday Inn as well, but I found that going through Ball Conference and being able to pick my own caterer and bring in my own alcohol was going to save me some $$.  If you need more info just let me know :)

you might want to reallocate some of your funds to hiring a bus to take people from the hotel to a reception site. Hotels are typically expensive, especially for what you get.

Check Hotel Phillips in downtown KC. I just booked there myself. Its a beautiful hotel decorated to the hilt in beautiful original Art Decor decor. The rooms are nice (I think they said they were all newly renovated), its close to the new power and light (fun for guests if they arrive early) and the staff is super nice. I looked around a lot and found that they were super affordable and really flexible! There are some pretty good pics online...that is how I found them. Tell them the other Sarah sent you!

did you check some of the hotels by the airport. I believe my classmate said she booked the marriot at the airport for her Aug 2010 wedding.
