Las Vegas question

So we're going to Vegas for our honeymoon, and everyone whos ever been there keeps telling us 'Oh you have to stay on the strip, yadda yadda yadda..' well obviously those hotels are more expensive. My question is, is it worth the money to stay at a place where we're pretty much just going to be sleeping? Or should we just stay at some place like a Hampton Inn, and shuttle in to the strip? The average so far, for flight at hotel is around $975, and I can assume we'll be getting money from the wedding to help pay for it, but I just don't know what I should plan on. Thanks!

Re: Las Vegas question

  • I would definitely stay on the strip. I go to Vegas 2-3 times a year (just got back last night, actually!) and there are tons of good deals out there, particularly if you sign up for the players clubs and get their emails. I just got air and hotel for 2 nights for my FI and I at Mandalay Bay for $600 including taxes by just watching my email for deals. Seriously, the strip is where you'll be and taking a shuttle is just kind of lame. Plus, do you really want to HM in a Hampton Inn? If you can swing it, stay on the strip!
  • Oh, and I paid $99 for Saturday and $69 for Sunday at MB... and get deals for $39-69 per night ALL the time for hotels like Luxor, NY NY, MGM Grand. Sign up for the players club and watch your email!
  • I live in Vegas and am planning my wedding for November of this year.  I got a discounted rate to block rooms at a local hotel (Wingate & Homewood Suites) and my cousins found cheaper rates at hotels on the strip! It is going to come down to you doing your research.  You're going to have to spend some time comparing - is it more cost effective to stay on the strip or to stay further away and shuttle or cab it back & forth.  If the difference is minor - I would just stay on the strip for convenience.  I realize you don't want to spend a lot of money - but it IS your honeymoon.  Stay on the strip & live it up! Enjoy!

  • I would def stay on the strip.  And with the economy the way it is, the rates you see today will likely be much less when your HM rolls around unless you are looking at the same time as a big convention or the like.As pp said, sign up for the discount emails from different hotels and when you find a great deal jump on it.  They are out there to be had!
  • I had a great time staying in old Vegas in the 4 Queens on Fremont Street. The Deuce, public bus, has a $5 unlimited rides pass good for 24 hours and they are clean and have ac. If you can find a great deal on the strip, great, but the older hotels on Fremont also offer a great value and going back and forth isn't a big deal.Shop around, do some research, there are deals for pretty much all the hotels if you look hard enough.
  • I definitely suggest staying on the strip! FI and I went to Vegas a few months back and we did a lot more than sleep in our hotel. We stayed at MGM Grand and sometiems never even left the hotel. Between all the great restaurants, shows, and great pool area there were a day or two where we never left the hotel. We loved the lazy river and the fact that there were more than one pool to pick from. We saw a Cirque du Soleil show right in our hotel and there were tons of great restaurants to pick from for dinner each night. Plus once you walk out the door there are so many other neat casinos within walking distance. Most of the activities are on the strip, and if you're staying on the strip you won't have to pay for a taxi to get to the other attractions you are looking for. Plus, as pp's have mentioned there are so many great deals for Vegas right now that the rooms on the strip are greatly priced. FI and I went for 4 nights stayed on the strip and it even included airfare that only cost us $400 each! Check out the link below. We found great tickets and info on this site for extra stuff to do while there. http://www.lasvegas.com/
  • Stay on the Strip. It's the center of it all and you can walk right out of your hotel and enjoy it. To me, it would be silly to travel all that way and not be able to actually be in "Vegas."There are killer deals right now all over Vegas. In November we're staying at MGM for $59 a night.Try some of these sites:www.travel-ticker.comwww.smartervegas.comwww.kayak.com
  • "and I can assume we'll be getting money from the wedding to help pay for it, but I just don't know what I should plan on. "book for no more than you can pay for on your own.if you can onyl afford off of the strip-stay there.

  • See if you can find out where the Deuce runs (the strip shuttle)) . If it turns off to wear the Hard Rock is or something like that, it would take you off the strip and you might be able to find a cheaper hotel there but still have easy access to the strip. And like the others have said, right now they're desperate for people so might have some really good deals, especially if you're staying over some weeknights. There's a few places that are $69 for weeknights (older ones, but they're there). And eat at the Planet Hollywood buffet...about the middle of the strip. It's soooooo good.
  • I'm a Vegas local and I've been researching hotels for my out of town guests for our wedding next Wednesday, and I've found that the hotels on the strip can be considerably cheaper. I will also save you money for travel too, but if you want a great hotel off the strip, Red Rock Resort & Casino is beautiful and the rates (at least for our wedding night) for a suite were cheaper there than on the strip.
  • Your friends are right. You want to stay on the strip. We stay at the Mirage, which is right in the middle of the strip, and we can walk to everything. And it's not expensive at all. We went to see Penn & Teller at the Rio, which is not on the strip, and I thought that once the little bus got off the strip, the rest of the area there near the strip was junky and dangerous.
