Anyone having a donut cake?

I'm pretty indifferent about having a big cake but I recently saw a pic of a donut cake and love it (FI is like Homer Simpson when it comes to doughnuts!). Has anyone ever done this or is anyone planning on doing a donut cake? Need some help with the logistics - should I go with Dunkin Donuts or an actual bakery? How may donuts will I need for 150 ppl?   TIA!!Here's a pic of the cake I likehttp://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa89/fiona1978/Picture644-1.jpg

Hey girl! I am a pastry chef and make all kinds of cake for a living...and the simple breakdown is you are going to spend a lot of money for donuts!  Also, while the picture was really cool, it was probably the grooms "cake", note: a lot of people do not eat donuts in todays society, as a lot of people are on diets that wont allow for them to.Have you considered doing the grooms tower of donuts and a simple wedding cake also?  If you want to email (jen.payton@yahoo.com) me I can send you some basic prices but to break it down, you will need at least 2-3 donuts per person...hope that helps!

Mmmm...donuts. :) I've never been to Dunkin Donuts, do they make donuts like that? May be a stupid question whenever I see their ads and stuff the images are always just regular glazed. I think the only way the donut cake could go over well is if they're nicely decorated like in the photo. I would say 1-2 donuts per person actually. If you think of like a regular slice of cake most wedding cake slices are pretty thin. So eating one donut would be almost like eating one slice of cake. And you'd also probably be spending the same amount of money per donut as you would per slice of cake. $1-5 a slice...

I would bet you could do this pretty easy. Go to a donut shop and order enough donuts for everyone to get one (plus attendants and yourselves).  Then think like a cupcake cake. Find a platform similar to the one in the link (just search google for ideas) and many craft/bakery stores have something you can use.I dont think it would be any spendier than a traditional cake since it costs 1-5 bucks per slice of cake... you can get donuts for less than a buck each. the fancy ones would be more... depending on where you go.  Grocery stores have yummy donuts too. We're having a brownie cake and we're gonna ask the local grocery store bakeries what they think and go with them cause they're cheap.

Um, your link doesn't work, do either of these look like what you're talking about?http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aisledash.com/media/2007/12/52182272powdered.jpghttp://images.ibsys.com/2002/0218/1240362.jpgI think that they could be doable, and I really don't think that people are going to eat 2-3 donuts a piece (I would maybe eat 1).  You could have a display cake and have your venue serve extras from the back on a plate with espresso shots or coffee shots for a fun presentation.  Or, like a previous poster said, you could do the donut cake for a grooms cake and then do a crocombouche as an upscale "donut" cake.  I think it's definitely a non-American traditional cake that would make a big impact at the reception.  Here's a picture of what it would look like:http://specialmoments1.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/donut-cake.jpgGood luck with your planning!
