Caramel apples vs hot cider bar

I've been debating doing either a caramel apple as another favor or doing a hot cider bar. If we do the hot cider bar we would have two or three flavor options, cinnamon sticks to stir and we'd pick up fresh donuts from a local cider mill.

Currently our favors are also our escort cards, they are adorable glass containers that will be filled with color coordinated candies. If we did the caramel apples, I would have one at each place setting. Though we would have to ask about allergies when sending out RSVPs.

What do you all think? Do one or do both...or do neither?

Re: Caramel apples vs hot cider bar

  • I love the caramel apple idea. The hot cider bar is something so cute and different. I never heard of that at a wedding. I think is would be a very nice touch to your wedding. It all comes down to cost. If you can afford to do both, why not!!!
  • I'm so glad you like the ideas! The few people I've told have told me they were tacky and people would hate them. One went so far as to tell me I might as well grab a bunch of leaves and branches from outside and throw them around if I want to stick with an Autumn theme. ::rolls eyes:: she's not the friendliest of people but her comments made me start to doubt if it's a good idea or not.

The apple would be easier to accomplish especially from a DIY standpoint. I'd want to do Lady Apples instead of full-size, because I think they would look cuter. I do love the apple cider bar but I don't know if I have the time to put that together and making sure it's constantly stocked throughout the night could be a hassle. Leaning more towards the individual apple..

FI wants a nacho cheese fountain, interesting huh?

  • I thought about the apple bar, but I might do apple slices with chocolate, caramel, or whatever to drizzle or dip and toppings to sprinkle on. A lot easier and less messy. I would just have to get a few apple cutters but those are fairly cheap.

  • I lvoe both ideas, but I would personally go for the apples over the cider if choosing only one.  During your reception, you're not gonig to want to worry abotu whether the cider is still hot, or if it's still stocked up.  Even if you had someone else manning it, the worry would probably still be in your mind.  The apples, if wrapped will also be much easier for those with allergies.

But seriously, I don't think either of them are tacky at all!

  • I have also decided to do something similar.  I am thinking of doing one cider when guests are arriving.  My ceremony is outside and the sun will be going down at this time so it may be cooler.  I have been comparing  the prices of caramel apples and cider donuts.  I think I may have to do half and half and then just have everything on the dessert table.  The apples can get expensive esp the fancier ones.

I actually wouldn't mind if it is during cocktail hour with our other food. If it was later, that could cause a problem!

I like the caramel apple idea. It's so easy to prep those in advance.

If you do an apple slice bar, you have to worry about keeping it stocked with toppings and such. Also, apple slices will turn brown unless you treat them with lemon juice first. Same with cider; you'd be worried about the stock levels all night.

If you're worried about allergies, don't cover the apples with chopped nuts. Use sprinkles or toffee or something similar. Or just leave them plain.

  • We are actually offering our guests hot mullied apple cider and homemade mini pumpkin doughnuts when they arrive

  • I love the idea of having apple cider at the wedding, I really want it at mine! Maybe not as a bar, but having it as a drink option. I also actually wanted to do caramel apple place cards/favors too! I think it's a waste to spend a bunch of money on favors no one really uses/wants and that would cover 2 things! As someone else said, it's easy to do those ahead of time as well and stick with the theme. I LOVE everything about fall.
