Say Yes to the Dress

I am about to leave her to go and try on dresses from a well known salon in the Pittsburgh Area with family and my maid of honor. I am sooo excited about finding my dress. I have asked my fiances opinon on what he would like to see me in and he lets me know, but face it he doesn't care. I have started looking and getting ideas since I got engaged in November. According to Randi and the other consultants in Say Yes to the Dress, I am a bride that is afraid of committeement. I have the photographer, venue/catering, ceremony, and dj, but haven't said yes to the dress! I have been to probably 10 dress shops this being number 10. I have been to so many since I live about 2 1/2 hours from my fiances family so to have them driving down or us driving up for a hour would be crazy, so I have gone shopping with both. I have an idea what I like and found one, but feel like I wanna see EVERYTHING before I committ. Depending on the designer I hear it can take anywhere from 5 months to a year to get a dress. Has anyone bought there dress yet? Has or did anyone go to as many dress shops as me. I don't know if it is because of my budget or just the fact of cost. I have a very NICE budget $$$ and I am thankful of my grandmother and parents willing to pay, but I think is it really worth it. Right now I am going between Maggie Sottero and Mori Lee. I feel like this is the hardest part, everything else is easy (so far). Sorry if this seems to be a vent, maybe I thought when I found the dress I would cry like they do on SYTTD :) I have said this might be the one.

Re: Say Yes to the Dress

  • I love Maggie Sottero dresses!!! I am already a indecisive person so I told my self that I would only visit 4 stores in my area. If I found the one the I would stop looking. I went to 1 bridal store and tried on about 5 or 6 dresses. I then knew the first one I tried on was the one I wanted to get married in. Me personally I know that I did not want to spend $$$ on my wedding dress. I knew that I could find one that I loved that wasn't $$$ and I could put that money else where. I also thought that I would have the "omg"!!! crying moment like all the brides do but I didn't. I was more like yes!!! I found my wedding dress!!!! I am not much of a crier. Just don't be disappointed if you don't have that crying moment if you find your dress. Good Luck on dress shopping and don't forget take plenty of pictures if you can!!!

  • I bought a Maggie Sottero dress and also loved a couple Mori Lee dresses. I think I went to 4 bridal shops. I found my dress at the last one and I didn't cry, but I did feel extraordinarily beautiful. The dress was very me, it looked great on me, and there wasn't anything I would change. I'm sure there are other dresses out there I could have looked just as amazing in, but there wasn't a need to keep going.

I think sometimes it is hard to choose because you've likely dreamed of buying and wearing your dress for a very long time and to think that it's over can be hard. Just remember that as important as it might be and as many pictures as you might have, it's still just what you wear on ONE day so don't stress yourself out over it.

As Randy says, when you found the right guy, you didn't have to keep dating to try every other guy on the planet, so when you find a dress you love, stop shopping!

  • I went to quite a few stores and tried on too many dresses. I didn`t have an extraordinary this is the dress moment. I teared and couldn`t stop smiling but it was no where near the reaction you see on SYTTD.

When you find the right one you will know and you won`t have the desire to keep trying on dresses.

    Good luck!

I only went to one store and was just going to try on dresses for fun. Well I tried on about 4-5 dresses and then when I tried on the last one I knew it was it. I just had that feeling and it also helped that my mom started crying too. Before my mom actually bought the dress for me, I had my grandma come to the store a couple of days later to see me in my dress. I knew she would tell me honestly what she thought... she cried too. It was the perfect moment. We bought the dress that day.

  • I only went to one store and I totally didn't expect to get my dress then :-P

Ended up buying a sample that fit perfectly other than being too long, it wasn't an emotional moment like those you see on TV. That's the one thing I hate about the wedding industry, they make EVERYTHING into a huge deal and expect brides to do the same when it really doesn't have to.

Not everyone has an ah-ha moment when they find their dress and have this huge, emotional reaction. Don't expect that, otherwise you'll create more stress for yourself.

  • I bought a Pronovias dress.  I had looked around quite a bit and knew I really liked Pronovias before I went shopping.  I went to one store and put on many different designers but loved this one Pronovias dress.  I didn't expect to buy in the first store, but the dress was just me!

I didn't cry- I don't really cry about those types of things.  Just because you don't cry, doesn't mean it isn't "the one".

  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts and support! I actually said Yes to the Dress today. I went with the Maggie Sottero dress I had tried on at other stores. My mom doesn't love it but she likes it and  that was hard for me. My aunt and maid of honor love it and actually cried which made me. I decided to go with the maggie.. even though it was half as much as the mori lee, when I look at them and put them both on I see myself in the maggie. Plus the satin material seemed nicer then the other and has alot more detail then the other which is what makes me look stunning. Thanks. love all the support on this board!!!

  • jmc- you should be more than okay. My dress is taking 6 months to come in and I know that's one of the longer times for a designer. A year or so is plenty of time.
