Is groom's cake supposed to be a surprise?

I had no idea and now my mom is saying it is. I always thought the groom helped pick it out since thte bride has most say on everything else, including the main cake.

I was looking forward to hear what my fiancee wanted in HIS cake.

Thoughts?

I have never heard that.   But some girls do surprise the groom  by having one specially made like with their alma mater, favorite hobby, etc.  I asked my DH about it and he didn't want one so we just skipped it and made a tier of the wedding cake chocolate.

See, i don't get the whole grooms cake thing. But whatever floats your boat. I've never heard of it being a surprise...after all, isn't it supposed to be the one thing that the groom gets to plan based on what he likes?

Ours is not a surprise.  FI said if I sucked it up and let him get a replica of the red velvet armadillo from Steel Magnolias, he would go along with all of my other choices.

I've never actually been to a wedding with a grooms cake. My mom and I were going to order a grooms cake for my DH for the rehearsal dinner, but he wasn't interested so we skipped it and saved the money and put it towards something else instead. I don't think it has to be a surprise, especially if you were looking for his input. Just ask!

I've only heard of the groom's cake being a surprise in regions where they aren't common, so the groom didn't know what a groom's cake was.  In places where you see them more frequently, the groom usually has input, in my experience.

FI would kill me if I sprung one on him.  He's had his heart set on a grooms cake with his grad school alma mater's mascot for the longest time.

My FI doesn't know anything about weddings so I was planning on surprising him... but after reading this now I'm thinking about reconsidering it!

I'm surprising my fiance with one - it'll be his favorite football team's helmet.  For me, it's the surprise value of "Wow, you had this awesome/amazing cake done for me."  He picked a specific flavor cake and filling when we had our taste testing, but instead of it being in the wedding cake, his groom's cake will be that flavor.

I think it's whatever you want to do.  Grooms cake aren't very popular in our area (I've only been to one wedding where there was one) so for me, it's all about the surprise element.

Thanks for the input! You know, I didn't even realize that there were weddings that didn't have grooms cakes.

My mom has been pretty pushy and gets upset over little things like this, so I'm just going to let her think I'm surprising him. I really want him to have this one thing all to himself.

Whenever I hear "red velvet cake" I think of that movie too.  It's classic.  I used to say that my colors were "blush and bashful" until I finally picked my wedding colors.

I didn't evenknow that people got married without a groom's cake! I told my FI he can have it either way.  He can pick a design or I'll surprise him with a design.  I think he's going for an oil rig (we both work in the energy industry).  Secretely he's excited about it, I think.

    Ditto on the steel magnolias!

Groomscakes aren't common around here, I asked FI if he wanted one and he said not really, he didn't care.

But we're totally suprising him with one at the rehearsal dinner.

As a kid, his B-day cakes were always funfetti with cherry frosting, so he keeps suggesting we just make our own wedding cake the same way lol. So we're making this tiered pink grooms cake and covering it with things he likes; mario, transformers, harry potter glasses, Final fantasy figures, pandas, and whatever else we find!

I think he's going to really like it! And we're going to have fun making it for him!

FI's said he doesn't really care about having one, but I want chocolate cake somewhere. So odds are one layer of the wedding cake will be chocolate or he'll get a cake. Problem is deciding on the design. He really doesn't have any hobbies so to speak.

I am thought it was supposed to be a surprise too... prob cuz of all those Cake Boss shows lol! I think I'll still surprise him with one... I figured it was a way of me showing thanks for helping me stay sane with the wedding, heres a cake dedicated to you and it proves I know what you like. In my case, he loves to golf so I'm getting him- yup you guessed it- a golf themed grooms cake. lol

We're having one (Southern US) but fiancé wanted to pick it out - he wanted it to be chocolate and he wants a cake that looks like Busch Stadium...we'll see, because I have no idea what a stadium cake would cost us!

We aren't having a grooms cake, he doesn't want one.  He said he would rather have a nacho cheese fountain...We'll see.  Haha.

Groom's cake  comes from a Southern tradition, from what I don't know. My niece had a spice cake decorated in the Green Lantern logo for her groom as a surprise.
I asked my FI what flavor & frosting he wanted - chocolate of course, a man after my own heart. I'll be surprising him by adding a Mustang car, lake with boat & amphabian plane as decorations for him, since he does all 3.
We're keeping the wedding cake simple with white & red velvet layers that way there's a little something for everyone.
It's your wedding, do what you like & can afford.

FI thinks it would be really great to have a cornbread "cake" covered in chili "frosting". I vetoed. We're leaning towards Italian creme cake (one of his favorites!)
