Sheet cake or Wedding cake

This may sound kind of weird, but I read in a magazine that you can have a fake wedding cake (bottom tier will be real for cutting) and a sheet cake in the kitchen to serve your guests.  The top tiers will be styrofoam or something and it will all be decorated of course.   Will this be cheaper than buying a wedding cake or cheesy?  What do you think?  Thanks!

Re: Sheet cake or Wedding cake

  • The decorating can be expensive, so having a fake, decorated cake might not save you all that much money.  Why not have a small cake to cut, if you want that, and then have the sheet cakes?  I am pretty sure that will be cheaper.
  • The cost of a cake is in the decorating and it doesn't matter if the baker is decorating a cake or styrofoam.

If you want to save money, you can always have a small cake for cutting and then sheet cakes in the kitchen.

  • ITA with the above. The cost of the tiered cakes is in the decorating, not the cake.
You could get what our caterer called a "sample cake", which is 2 small tiered layers for simply the photo op, then save the top layer for your anniversary.

I highly suggest the sheet cakes at Costco. They serve 48 when cut, are $17 each, and absolutely delicious. They are much less than what a bakery would charge, if your issue is money. They sell them in 3-5 flavors, with a choice of 3-5 filling layers, they have one that is iced in all white buttercream with decorative roses..........yummmmm........Costco cakes Smile

But check with your venue. Some don't allow outside cakes. They may also charge a cutting fee regardless of the cake type.
  • Even the simplest tiered cakes from professional bakeries (not Costco, but not wedding-cake-specialty shops, either) are about $6/slice here. Sheet cake is about $2/slice. So we're working on the smallest possible 3-tier cake, and making up the balance with sheet cake.

Smallest-possible is still about 70 slices, at 3 tiers, though.
  • We are having a small two tiered cake for us to have and then doing cupcakes for the remaining guests.  Cut cost way down!
  • Have you thought about serving Cake Pops as an alternative to cake? They are much cheaper and are very practical. The are a huge trend right now and come is amazing flavors. Check out www.goodiesforgifts.com and search for cake pops. There are a few companies that can work with your directly and give you a good price per pop.

Vendors aren't allowed on these boards. Since your user name matches the name of the company you keep posting about.... you are clearly a vendor.
  • The reason for the styrofoam is weight, if a cake is particulary large they will use it so that the cake doesn't  collapse under it's own weight.
