May 2013 Weddings

Just realized my date is Memorial Day weekend ...

The 24th was the last slot they had available for May and I didn't give it a thought until just now. Apparently, that will be the Friday of MD that Monday.

I'm not sure what to think. On the one hand, it could be cool to have all the family together for the weekend and could do something fun like a rehearsal dinner or day after BBQ? On the other hand, it might interrupt people's weekend plans not to mention send hotel rates higher since we live in a touristy area right on the water?

Is this something to start getting stomach pangs over or is this just one of those "it is what it is" things?

  • Where exactly are you getting married?

There will be a lot of traffic the Friday of Memorial Day weekend here in the north east corridor...  I'd be nervous.

  • I'm getting married on the 24th. Granted I don't live in a touristy area but I have not had any problems and haven't worried once about memorial day. My and FI's families are actually happy we decided to do it on an extended weekend. Hope it all works out!

  • Deopending on where you are traffic could definitely be a problem, but since you have a year to plan ahead. The only people the date may be a problem for are people who have annual plans for Memorial day, but since it is a year ahead and on Friday night I don't see it being a big deal. You can do it!

  • I wouldn't worry about it.

I originally looked at that weekend and my family was ok with it, they love you and they'll be there because it's your wedding.

Hotel rates may be a little higher, but maybe you can do your hotel blocks now and lock in a lower rate. I would call around and see what you can find. But I wouldn't let it worry you.

  • I'm getting married on Friday, May 24 as well. I live in the Baltimore/Washington DC area and there is always heavy traffic that weekend, but everyone on my guest list lives fairly close and anyone who is OOT will be arriving the day before. I think MMD weekend works out just fine. :)

  • Some would consider Mall of America to be touristy, and we live 15 minutes from it lol. A lot of people around here go up to northern MN for MDW, so I'd think if anything our relatives that are coming from up north will be going in the opposite direction of traffic.

  • Hi ... You are going to get Cape traffic but that is the only bad thing about it.  I think people will incorporate your wedding into a great memorial day weekend and a BBQ or better yet, a good old New England Clambake would be a great day after thing to do.  I don't know if your guests are from out of town but they will likely be thankful of having an extra day.  I am getting married on May 4th which happens to be a holiday weekend in Ireland so I am in the same position, except over there.  This has helped immensely with my Irish friends who have to travel across the country (a whole 3.5 hours to cross the country mind you) to get there.
