Getting rid of DVDs?

DH and I have some doubles of dvds that we'd like to get rid of.

I've never sold them before; what's my best option for getting rid of them and maybe getting a few dollars?

Re: Getting rid of DVDs?

  • You might be able to sell them to Blockbuster or another video store that sells previewed DVDs.  Or you could sell them on Amazon.
  • We tend to sell them back to Blockbuster. We could probably get more sometimes with one of the used CD/DVD stores, but Blockbuster is closeby and they have pricelists for DVDs as opposed to other places that tend to give arbitrary amounts.
  • My husband sells them on amazon normally, even if you only charge 2$ for the movie, you end up getting that plus whatever shipping is estimated to be, which is normally higher than what it ends up being. He sold a lot of his unwanted dvd's that way and made quite a lot of money, adding in old OLD gaming systems and some old games, he sold nearly 1000$ worth of stuff in a matter of a month or two. You just need to find out what the comparable prices are.
  • I had a lot of luck selling old CDs on half.com

  • Great, I'll look in to those options.  Thanks!

  • I've sold a lot of used video games on ebay, that worked well too.
  • I'm going to give DH the options and let him deal with it.  He's the one who does all of the transactions on the auction house in WoW, lol.  That's got to translate to some skills in real life...I hope.

  • I love using Amazon. You might have to list them for a few bucks in order to turn a profit (amazon gives you shipping fees, but also takes a cut). Depending on their popularity, you might also end up sitting on them for a while. The other option, though, is to try and get rid of them at a garage sale or trade them into a used DVD/CD store, which are becoming less common.

  • I second places like Blockbuster, just for the ease.
  • FI has had luck with CL lately.  We're loading all of our dvd's onto the computer harddrive and selling the hardcopy's.  He's made a fair amount the put towards the home theatre laptop.
  • mocha - that's a great idea.  How much space does each movie take up?

We already have DH's old computer hooked up to our big tv so that we can stream movies from netflix.  I wouldn't be against getting a TB external hard drive and I'm sure DH would love to fiddle with it...

  • Mocha, did you all use just a regular hard drive?  I want to set up a home media server, I think.  But. . . time and money are not plentiful at the moment for that.

  • I think each dvd in it's orginal format takes up to 5 gb, but FI runs a compression program on it, so it's down to a few gb per movie.  TV episodes are less.

He's got it all on the desktop harddrive at the moment.  He's got a second copy on a portable harddrive too.  I think it's a 500gb just for the movies and music.

I figured out how to stream from the desktop to the xbox360, but we don't want to have that and the tv running just to listen to music, so he's just ordered a laptop with hdmi output.

I'll have to bug him about it more later, he's being cranky cause the truck won't start and his old laptop is giving him major headaches going back to Vista.
  • I know the programs he uses are DVDFab and Handbrake; one rips the dvd to the harddrive and the other one compresses the file so it stores better.  Yes, it's just a regular dvd drive, probably a speedy one.  He built a big ol' desktop with dvd ripping and mp3 storage in mind.  One of these days we'll get a bluray drive so he can rip bluray movies and we can ditch those too.  We get everything from netflix, rip it, then send it back.  It's been working really well so far, they look great on the big tv.

Okay, I wasn't going to say this, but we do the same thing.  And DH built his computer ages ago with that in mind!  Only he burns them to dvd and then deletes them.  We do purchase the movies we really like, though.

I'm going to throw the idea by H and see what he thinks...I may need to pick your [husband's] brain more.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />
