Hyphenation Help

I have decided that I would like to keep my last name instead of changing it (I just really like my name...go figure!).  If I wanted to start introducing myself as a hyphenation (EX. "Tara maiden name-husband last name") do I need to do anything legally?  Anyone have any experience with this?  Also, if I am not changing my last name do I need to do anything else other than filing our license with clerk of courts?

PS. Did anyone else find their clerk of courts "pre-marital" book EXTREMELY depressing?  I was like, we're not even married and we're already talking about divorce here?  C'mon people!

Yes the Clerk of courts book was very depressing. I do believe you have to change your name with Social security to legally take your husbands last name (even if you are hyphenating it.

I know some ladies who kept their maiden name as their middle name and added their H name it saves on the hyphen. However, if you are hyphening your name you still must change your social security card.

Depends on how you intend to use it. My mom got married and hyphenated and only changed her license, she introduced herself as Elaine hername- hisname and on all her paperwork she just retain her maiden name. Should I even get that book lol?

Heeeyyyy....I never got a book.  Kinda glad I didn't though.  Maybe because we went through pre-marital counseling?

Tara, I am going through the name change process now and I am all too familiar with it.  Yes, if you are changing your name at all you will need to take your official marriage certificate to the SS office to change your name.  Then, after 48 hours you can go to the DL office to get a new DL.  However, you have to make sure you have your birth certificate and paper from the SS office.  The laws now are very strict.  You can't change the name on your license without it.  GL!

i changed my Facebook Name to Christy Maiden Married.  So it's official enough in mine and everyone else's eyes is the way I see it.  I haven't done anything else legal.  I will be keeping my maiden name professionally.  This whole name changing business is rather intimidating to me so I'm procrastinating.
