Sprained Ankle

I sprained my ankle last night.  I'm icing, elevating, and taking ibuprofen.  When is it safe to do cardio again?  How will I know?

  • When I sprained my ankle in high school, my doctor told me to do an exercise where I used my big toe to "draw" the alphabet every day for two weeks. It's a good exercise to help strengthen the ankle and keep it mobile. I would stick to low impact cardio, like an elliptical for a couple weeks. After that you could probably ease back into your routine.

  • Can you walk on it without limping? You should stay off it until you can walk without limping. After that, just go slow and if it hurts, stop.
