Plus-Sized

David's Bridal?

On Saturday, I have my wedding dress appointment at David's Bridal and I'm aware that do carry and sell plus size wedding dresses. But do they also have sample plus size wedding dresses in stock or do they just have the plus size wedding dresses to try on? I'm just very new to all this.

Re: David's Bridal?

  • I don't really understand your question?  They have many different PS dresses to try on, but from what I'm aware of they are all sample dresses and then you order them.  They also have some dresses you can buy off the rack, primarily sale and discontinued items.

They have plus sized dresses for you to try on.  The entire store is pretty much sample dresses.  Once you choose your dress, they will order a brand new one for you, never worn.

Yes, David's Bridal carries plus-size samples.  Their service can be hit or miss, though, so I recommend you take along a friend or family member who will help you hunt for dresses and to try them on, in case your salesperson is lackluster.  Don't let them pressure you - remember, there are more places than one to buy a dress, so it's up to them and the selection to impress you.

You're in Northeast Ohio?  You can also try the Alfred Angelo Signature store in Boardman, or one of the two in Pittsburgh PA.  AA also carries plus-size samples.

  • DB mostly carries samples to be tried on, in plus size and standard sizing.  There may be a few dresses in store that can be purchased and taken home that day (mostly clearance items, so no guarantee your size would be available), but most likely you will order your dress if you end up buying from them.

Don't feel pressured to buy a dress if you aren't ready.  Saturday's can be very busy at the store so a friend or helpful family member might be a big help.  Try to relax and enjoy!

  • I am a size 16 and they had plenty for me to try on. Also many in size 18 and 20. I am sure all DB stores will have a good selection to choose from. One bit of advice ahead of time is that I was told if the store has your size in stock that that is the dress they must sell you. I was told this at checkout when they went to bag up what I thought was a sample dress. I thought I would order it, but they actually went to bag up the store one. I don't know that this is entirely what all stores are supposed to do. Maybe they were somehow trying to get rid of the sample at full price. I insisted that they order me a new one since the sample dress had make-up on it and a rip in it. With some resistance they finally did order me the new dress I wanted. They originally said the computer would not let them do it if the store had it in stock but somehow the computer let them when I said I would go elsewhere. Just a heads up if you find somthing they can in fact order it.

When I was there there were many that were plus sized and very pretty.  It is an off the rack store however, so what you try on is what you get, unless it needs to be ordered in a size that they don't have at that time.

I agree with PP though, take a friend of family member that isn't afraid to speak up if you still want to look for more dresses and the sales lady isn't very helpful.
  • I most definitely did not take home the sample dress I tried on, even though it was the correct size. They ordered me a new one and shipped it to my house for free.

  • You may also want to be sure you have the proper underwear/shapewear that you will be wearing, to get the proper and full effect

  • They do have plus size samples, but I would call ahead and ask how many samples they have in your size. That's what I did and that determined which DB I went to.

Planning Bio-Added FOR SALE page, will be adding more stuff to it soon!
  • They have both and I wound up taking home my dress that day. It turned out a lot of my "favorites" were sale/discontinued dresses so I caught a break that they had one I wanted. Not to mention that I LOVED my dress and am still thrilled that I got to take it home that day!

I didn't have any problems with the stuff they gave me to wear, except that they kept trying to make me wear their shoes (stuck to my own socks- it was after work and I have terrible foot pain post-work and DID not need to be wearing strange shoes.) They also kept trying to get tiaras on me, which I stopped pretty much immediately as well.

I had a great time and a great consultant but as other have said, it can be hit-or-miss. Best of luck and be sure to speak up if you don't like how your visit is going- I disliked the dressing room they originally put me at (right in the front, in full view of the store entrance and just too "front and center!" for me) and they moved me to another one.

  • I had an amazing experience at David's Bridal when I went three weeks ago. I went for 2 days in a row, the first time for bridesmaids dresses (and I tried a few on myself) and the next day I went with my mom to shop for my dress. I had the same consultant both days. She was awesome; I'd say that she was the reason my experience was so great.

That being said, if you get off to a bad start with your sales consultant or you don't like who you're working with, you can ask for someone else. And do. Keep in mind that these people are supposed to try to sell you things, but they aren't supposed to make you uncomfortable. They are seeing you in your underwear, taking your measurements, and supposed to build a relationship with you- finding  out your likes and dislikes. If they're not listening to what you want; talk to a manager and get someone else.

I see that your post said you're going Saturday. Today is now saturday. How'd it go?!

  • Unfortunately I had an unpleasant time during my bridal appointment. The consultant was rude and I guess she is not experienced with a plus size bride because she was not familiar with their larger size samples. I'm interested in a tea length style dress as my wedding theme is vintage and did not want longer dress that weighed on me which she did not understand. She tried to get me in longer dresses and I was adamant on my decision. They didn't have any tea length dresses in plus size samples and not in their other locations around me either. I was very disappointmented because I tried to pick dresses they were store only. I talked to the manager and she completely understood me it seems, she's going to talk to their distributor and see if she can get my dress in quicker so it can be altered or not. But other than that I did not feel like a blissful bride.

Good news I got my bridemaid's dresses and flower girl dress.

  • Sorry about your bad appointment.  Did you end up picking a dress?  You said they were having it sent in sooner.  If you didnt, were there any longer ones that you liked that you could take to a seamstress and have it made into a tea length dress?
  • Yes I did pick a dress, they just don't know if they can get it in time. Only flaw in that is I fall into I don't know how the dress is going to look on me when they receive it. There wasn't any long dresses I liked and if I did the alterations estimate was way out of my budget when my consultant told me. I just hope next month when I go back I get a more friendlier consultant.

  • Totally agree with MissYumi.  I'm a street-size 16, and I told the DB clerk that I didn't want strapless and I didn't want a big poofy ball gown, and she said that they had nothing that she knew of that would fit and handed me a catalog and told me to sit on the couch at the back of the room.  And I sat back there with my mother, and then we left.

MissYumi:  If you find that you need another dress, I bought a 2-piece sparkly wedding/cocktail dress, tea length, off the rack at Dillards.
  • The DB here was very rude to me as well. I tried on about 8 different dresses in the 18-26 range. All the ones online that say available in plus sizes were special order only and I could not try them on in the store.

The breaking point was when the consultant told me that I had already tried on all the plus sized samples and there was no way she could help me anymore.

So I went to a different store and refuse to set foot in DB for anything.

  • My girlfriend bought her dress at Belle Bridal Boutique-Plus Size Couture in Bellevue, KY. It's like the only shop dedicated to plus size bridal in the tri state area.  The staff was great and it's completely private appointments. May be worth checking out.
  • I wish I could take a weekend and go to KY ... LOL... I have an appointment at DB tomorrow... I am excited, but scared I will get crappy service... everyone pray I get a good sales person!
  • So I had an amazing consultant at David's Bridal in West Des Moines Iowa.. her name was Mashara she took the time to listen to what I wanted, and picked out the dress of my dreams on the FIRST try! She then spent a good hour with my BM's picking out dresses... she made it so easy for me!!

  • Yumi I'm from the mayfield area and I went to the db up the street from me 3 different times. Had different consultants each time..guess what they were beaches everytime! They all need attitude adjustments lol
