Pre-wedding Parties

Engagement Party Question

So do we have to have one? And if so, do we throw it ourselves? Who do we invite? I'm so confused on what this etiquette here is. We both are saving every dime we have for the wedding and the last thing we should be doing is throwing any kind of party for ourselves. Not to mention most of our bridal party lives out of town and we could never expect them to fly to us for this. Can we just skip this all together?

No, you do not have to have one.  No, you do not throw any pre-wedding parties yourselves.

They are not at all a requirement and most people I know don't have them.

We invited a few friends to a cabin we have in the woods for an impromptu engagement party that we planned ourselves. 12 people (all couples) showed up, a lot of friends couldn't make it. Our wedding is in 2 years, but it was fun. Given how everyone knows through facebook and the phone, it's really a time to have fun with your friends and let it all sink in (at least, that's my opinion).
