Set on a colored gemstone ring

So, my bf and I have been discussing marriage. Particularly rings. He's Persian and is deadset against a diamond. He thinks they are boring, coloreless, lack personality, and can be easily faked. He's much more impressed with a natural sapphire or emerald. I don't particularly see a problem with this as even the new Princess Kate got engaged with a colored stone ring. However, while looking up rings, I can't seem to come across much above $4000 (with the exception of colored diamonds that run closer to $20,000 and out of our budget). Now, I know the price of the ring doesn't matter, but we are both successful professionals in a big city, and want something I can show off. Suggestions? Also, any resources on beautiful colored engagement rings would be great too. Thanks!

Maybe just get one with a few stones?

Frankly, I think if you're getting engaged so you can show off your ring, you'll have bigger problems than the size of the stone.

[QUOTE]No one will know how much your ring cost unless you tell them. Which, IMO is tacky. As you said, the price of the ring does not matter. My suggestion is to find a ring that you love and can afford.

Yes, this.  I've never heard of someone saying "I want a ring that costs more than $xx."  It's usually the opposite...

Anyway, the setting will add to the cost, obviously.  If you want platinum, the price will go up substantially.  If you want side stones or a halo, it will also jump.  I would suggest you and your BF talk about a budget to not go <u>OVER</u> and just look around at what you like in that price range.

    Hi there.

I think you should go get an idea for what you like first. Go to some higher-end jewelry stores with a friend and try some rings on, both diamond/clear stone and colored stones. Then, perhaps, go with your BF and look together.

Don't forget that YOU are the one who will be wearing the ring every day for what may be decades to come. IMO, you should have at least 51% of the input in what the ring looks like.

Just find a ring you love, don't worry about the price. If you love it you will want to show it off no matter what it costs.

Oh and not that it's really that important but it isn't Princess Kate it's Duchess Kate - she is not a princess.

I agree with Liv, it doesn't matter if you don't think you've spent enough as long as you love the ring.
Also, $4,000 is going to get you a gorgeous ring, and I'm sure you'll be proud to show it off. Plus, you'll have extra money for your wedding, honeymoon, or post marriage expenses.

No one is going to know how much you spent on your ring whether it's a diamond or not unless you tell them. Just get a ring you love and can afford and don't worry so much about how much it costs.

FTR I have a sapphire e-ring and it's gorgeous and we didn't spend anywhere near 4k on it.

My ring came out at right under $1500 - the setting is palladium and the stone is a 1.3 carat lab created sapphire. I think you could definitely get something beautiful in your price range.

Although she doesn't go by Kate anymore either!OP, don't worry about the cost. If you want something showy, then look for a statement ring, rather than a statement price tag. Unless you plan on wearing the price tag with your ring, it won't make a difference. And FWIW, there's absolutely nothing wrong with non-diamond e-rings. Diamonds as engagement rings is a fairly new tradition, and in fact the older tradition is to give a sapphire (see the Royal family for instance).

Those are some lovely, lovely sapphire rings!  I want a sapphire ring!

OP:  I think it's a bit snobbish to say you want a ring to show off.  And it doesn't look like you'll have problems finding something to spend the money on.  So just find something you like and go with it.  I wouldn't worry about the price tag not being enough.
