Do you capatalize the H in hor d'oeuvres?

For my reception card, do I say:

Heavy Hor d'oeuvres reception to follow, or

Heavy hor d'oeuvres reception to follow?

Re: Do you capatalize the H in hor d'oeuvres?

  • No need to cap it unless you're initial capping every word (which is a viable stylistic choice). But you've got it spelled wrong. It's:

hors d'oeuvres (s at the end of hors)
  • and it's "hors" not "hor"
  • Fun fact: my grandfather's first language was Spanish.  When reading a menu at a restaurant once, he read hors d'oeuvres phonetically (as you would in English).   He didn't realize it was a French word.  Imagine how that sounded when it came out.  Now every time I read the word, I think of grandpa.

  • I never knew how to properly say that word... I always said it how it read..

I got funny looks when I asked my friend what hors devours were at her wedding.. I think the girls laughed for about 15 min and had tears...
