Outdoor Weddings

The outdoor aisle....

I am thinking about lining our aisle with satin sashes draped from sheppards hooks instead of tulle.  It would take 7-8 to do a 50-75 aisle, which is outside.  I am thinking about using a satin aisle runner, tacked down with garden fabric tacks, and have it in place before the ceremony.  The satin sashes would line the sides and block off the front of the aisle and prevent people from walking on the aisle runner before the bridal party marches.   I know most people say skip the aisle runner outside but I love the look and really want it.  I am thinking about ordering the white satin aisle runner from linen tablecloth: http://www.linentablecloth.com/product.asp?itemid=794

  • Is this a question? If so, I missed what you are asking.  It sounds pretty, but I think decorated aisles are a waste
dont make ur password so easy. gbck2CA2 hahahaha
  • Satin= slippery.  Have fun walking on an abundnce of wasted money.  Maybe just line the ground with dollar bills instead.

Thanks. I was just tossing around a few ideas.  I don't want to drive my friends and FI wedding nuts, so I come here to read about and toss out ideas. For the most part the ladies here give great advice when asked.

  • Love the idea of draping satin down the sides of the aisle!  Sounds beautiful!  I was thinking about doing this too.  But then, do guests have to enter to sit from the outside?  Is that wierd?

I'm definitely not doing an aisle runner though.  I'm too worried about it being slippery, especially if over grass.  Maybe flower petals though, but that is probably too expensive.

I'm hanging pomander balls along the aisle.  Then they can be moved inside for decorations; that way they serve double duty.

Its an outdoor wedding so they rows of chairs will be open from the outside. I've seen a couple wedding done this way.  I think the satin would so much more elegant than draping tulle.  As for rose petals, I don't think I can afford enough freeze dried ones to do an aisle and no way do I want to be picking up satin ones! LOL.  Although I may keep pricing he rose petals maybe I can find a good deal for the amt I need. I figure the aisle will be close to 75 feet long.

  • If you love the look of an aisle runner, then do it! I think if this is what you want and would like then go for it! I am doing pomander balls hanging from shepards hooks. I have not even thought about an aisle runner to be honest.

I'm not trying to be snotty, but how many people are you inviting that the aisle will be that long?  Cause, that's about this length:

    <a href="#" title="Click to view a larger photo" onclick="return gSiteLife.LoadForumPage('ForumImage', 'plckPhotoId', 'c775a407-d39f-4f6b-b8a7-79c2afa983ad', 'plckRedirectUrl', gSiteLife.EscapeValue(window.location.href));"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/7/8/c775a407-d39f-4f6b-b8a7-79c2afa983ad.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>

That would have to be about... 400 people?  If that's not your guest list, you might want to re-calculate your aisle size so that you're not spending money on extra fabric, etc.

You should check fiftyflowers.com for pricing on petals.  They're cheaper than freeze dried.

My guest list is around 225 people. We had planned to do rows of 10 chairs on each side of the aisle.  Plus I have the area from the reception doors across the patio before I get to the grass area.
    It looks like this:

These are the doors I will come thru:

  • That's just overkill.  Your aisle starts where the chairs start.  You don't need to have a blocked off area from where you're going to walk out the doors, all the way through the end.  Aisle's are much shorter than what you're trying to create.
  • And also (I'm not trying to be mean when I say this, just trying to get you to change your thinking a bit) when you're having a budget wedding, it doesn't make sense to spend sooo much money on something like an aisle, when you could easily use that money for more/better food.  Just something to think about.  I gave up all decorations for the ceremony location because I didn't want to spend the money on that, when I could use that to provide our guests with a nicer cocktail hour.
  • Outdoor aisles are fun. As far as the runner goes - ditch it. I 've had brides fall with those. Make sure that your aisle is wide enough so that as you walk down, you're not hitting anything.

  • I say go for the aisle runner, if that is what you want.
I am planning on having one, and am not worried about snagging/slippery because I will not be wearing heels. But if it comes down to it, the runner will be one of the first things to be sacrificed in the name of staying under budget.

As for flower petals... we plan on buying some fresh roses a few days before the wedding and getting some much needed stress relief by destroying them to get fresh petals.

Hope this helps & good luck!

  • I'm having an outdoor wedding and planning on doing an aisle runner myself.  We're going to be wearing ballet slippers so I don't see that we're going to have any issues with walking on it.  I say it's your wedding, do it the way you want it.
  • "I'm not trying to be snotty, but how many people are you inviting that the aisle will be that long?  Cause, that's about this length":

OUR seating is very skinny, and long... and ours will be about this long as well and we're only having 175 people.
i think the satin sounds beautiful, and don't worry about what snarky people say.... isn't there a specific board for people who want to bring down the mood?

LOL!!!  I feel the exact same way!  I plan to have a wide enough aisle so I don't bump into the chairs. As for the length, I don't want to cram people up together just so my aisle is shorter.
I have notice that some people never any anything good to say about other's ideas. I know when I ask opinions, I will get them, good or bad, and I'm a big girl I can take other opinions. That's part of why I dropped posting back answers.  And 75 feet is the standard size for most aisle runners.

  • We're on the same page. I too love the look of satin over tulle and am considering similar sashes for my outdoor wedding as well. As for the runner, I'm havin one too. Not sure why you got so much flack for it. Every location is differernt and we all have to evaluate our location/situation independently. So if you ask my opinion (which you did) I think it will look lovely, rich and very romantic.
  • I thought of using large stones tiles to make an "aisle" for our outdoor wedding. Kind of like stepping stones. A satin runner is likely to snag on high heels making it a fall hazard for outdoor weddings.
Another option is to have your flower girl/s drop an abundant amount of large white petals to simulate the look of a long white aisle. You can scoop up the petals afterward and repurpose them as table decor at your reception.

  • I think the satin would be pretty...you may want to put something more sturdy under since you wont be able to see uneven ground. Maybe like astroturf or the canvas isle runners the last girl was talking about. I think the draping of the satin would be beautiful! Hope it get easir to decide :)
