Honeymoon Discussions

San Juan, PR

We are getting married in 49 days! We still haven't booked a honeymoon and are thinking of San Juan. Does any one have any advice for us? We are thinking of just booking it ourselves. Can you get excursions through your hotel when you get there or should we book them through expedia. Thank you!

Re: San Juan, PR

  • I stayed at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan, very nice!! Beautiful pool, casino, great food, and great spa. I second that the night kayaking is great! We rented a convertible-best way to drive through the rainforest! Also did parasailing. There is tons to do!
  • We stayed at the Intercontinental in Isla Verde and enjoyed it, though that area is mainly good for being on the beach. Our hotel booked our rainforest expedition to El Yunque and had many other options, such as Bioluminescent Bay. We didn't want to rent a car and were only there for a short time, so booking little tours was the best way to get the highlights. We did Old San Juan in a day and saw just about every historic building there was - we particularly liked the old fort, the city wall, and the castle. The fort was very crowded while the castle was almost empty, and both happened to be free that day b/c the National Park Service was running a promotion. We were also happy to have lots of restaurant options, since Isla Verde is mainly resorts with overpriced food and then fast food joints on the main strip.

We stayed at La Concha in San Juan last month for our HM and it was AMAZING. Old San Juan is a must, and we hiked to the peak of El Yunque on our last day there. If you go to El Yunque, I suggest going on your own and going early before it gets really crowded, it's so peaceful in the morning and it felt like we had the entire rainforest to ourselves. We were supposed to do a ziplining/caving excursion  (http://www.adventurespr.com/) but I was sick most of the week and we had to cancel. There are a bunch of companies that do snorkel and kayak tours too. You can book through the hotel when you get there but it will be more expensive... you'd be better off booking through the tour companies' websites.

  • We stayed at the Intercontinental as well and really enjoyed our stay.  I would book tours directly through the operators thought, not the hotel or Expedia.  My #1 recommendation if you are relatively active is the waterfall/zipline tour with Acampa (it was amazing and the lunch they serve was seriously the best meal we had there).  Also strongly suggest you see the bio bay (we did the one in Fajardo with Pure Adventure and they were awesome).

If you are staying in San Juan, you really don't need a car, we only rented one for 2 days to drive out to Fajardo and Isabella the next day for horseback riding on the beach.  Parking is expensive and you really don't need a car to get around in town because the busses are pretty easy to use.
